Bali
News: A Governor Who Likes to Browse
Radar Bali recently published the following interview with Bali governor Made Mangku Pastika demonstrating that the island's Chief Executive is wired - maintaining contact with events and peoples via the Internet.

Balidiscovery.com presents a free translation of the interview below.

Radar Bali: When did you first become familiar with the Internet?

Pastika: "Since when? Well, it seems like from the very beginning of the introduction of this form of communication. Especially since the Internet became accessible in Indonesia."

Radar Bali: Are you addicted to the Internet?

Pastika: "Addicted, not really. But you need the Internet to be able to access information. If there are some things you don't quite understand, I search the Internet. There you can obtain a detailed explanation."

Radar Bali: Do you see any negative aspects to the Internet?

Pastika: "Negative Aspect? Clearly, there are some, if there is unrestricted use. Things with no limits often fall victim to abuse. Anything that becomes too free can become bad, requiring some form of control, such as guidelines on what's permissible and what's not."

Radar Bali: What are the positive aspects?

Pastika: "There are certainly many positive aspects (to the Internet). The Internet is able to provide information that is fast - even in a matter of seconds. All you need to do is type in what you're looking for and then start browsing. What you're looking for comes up on the screen: everything from history, the background on a person to even detailed maps via Google maps – it's all possible. The advanced technology, if used correctly, is useful to all of us."

Radar Bali: Do you participate in social networking such as Facebook?

Pastika: "I have an Email address which I use for communicating with friends or other information purposes. I just use Email."

Radar Bali: What do you like most about the Internet?

Pastika: "The ability to obtain news quickly. Whatever happens you can get information very fast. For example, the recent news of mail bombs. I was able to get information (from the Internet) much more quickly than compared to information from the television or newspapers. Early information can be seen from the Internet."

"It's also good for fast-breaking news information. Like an earthquake or the effects of a tsunami – information like this is always quicker via the Internet. From every aspect of news – it's all available on the Internet."

Radar Bali: How about the people of Bali as a whole?

Pastika: "I think we cannot ignore the important function of technology. Even more so the valuable information that is available via searching the Internet. Bali has to embrace the high speed access to information provided by the Internet. Moreover, it can be a study tool used to acquire any field of knowledge."

Radar Bali: So, do you always set aside time to access the Internet?

Pastika: "Yes, even though I have a busy schedule. Usually, in the morning if I'm preparing for work, I open the Internet for a moment to obtain information. Or if there is some major news event, I follow it via the Internet. Finally, if my schedule is really full, I access the Internet just before I go to bed."
