Hollywood star Richard Gere arrived in Bali on Tuesday

After touring Yogyakarta’s Borobudur temple and meeting with Indonesian officials, Golden Globe winning actor Richard Gere and his family are currently vacationing in Bali.
The actor did not respond to any journalist inquiries about his Bali trip, saying that it was a vacation and that he didn’t want to be disturbed.
Gere was in Indonesia on official invitation to attend a ceremony at Borobudur temple, and met with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Tourism and Culture Minister Jero Wacik in Jakarta. Gere, who is also a devout Buddhist, was reportedly enchanted by the temple and expressed interest in filming a movie about Sir Stamford Raffles discovery of the ancient temple.
“I won’t make a film like the kind that Julia Roberts made in Bali,” he said. “I want to make a film about the history of this temple. I really want to do this.”
Wacik was equally enchanted by Gere’s visit.“We were looking for an international figure who could relate closely to Borobudur, and that figure is Richard Gere,” he said. “He’s now become Indonesia’s informal tourism ambassador, for which he’s not being paid at all.”

Hollywood star Richard Gere arrived in Bali on Tuesday, along with his wife and son, for a holiday after visiting Indonesia's largest Buddhist monument, the Borobudur Temple in Yogyakarta, a day earlier.

Gere arrived at about 10 a.m. at Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, on board a flight with national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia from Adi Sutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta.

He and his wife refused to respond to journalists' inquiries, saying they were in Bali on vacation and did not want to be disturbed.,Gere is in Indonesia on an invitation from the Culture and Tourism Ministry in its efforts to promote tourism here.

He was swarmed by journalists and spectators alike while visiting Borobudur on Monday, forcing him to cancel part of his scheduled agenda, including a visit to neighboring Mendut and Pawon temples.

On Sunday, Gere met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, during which they reportedly discussed humanitarian issues.

Happy 484th anniversary to Jakarta

Happy 484th anniversary to Jakarta. What are our greetings and wishes
for our beloved capital  city?

Jakarta formerly Batavia and officially the Special Capital Territory

of Jakarta), is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Located on
the northwest coast of Java, it has an area of 661 square kilometres
(255 sq mi) and a 2010 census count population of 9,580,000. Jakarta
is the country's economic, cultural and political centre. It is the
most populous city in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia, and is the
tenth-largest city in the world. The urban area, Jabodetabek, is the
second largest in the world. Jakarta is listed as a global city in the
2008 Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC)
research. The city's name is derived from the Old Javanese word
"Jayakarta" which translates as "victorious deed", "complete act", or
"complete victory".

Established in the fourth century, the city became an important

trading port for the Kingdom of Sunda. It grew as the capital of the
colonial Dutch East Indies. It was made capital of Indonesia when the
country became independent after World War II. It was formerly known
as Sunda Kelapa (397–1527), Jayakarta (1527–1619), Batavia
(1619–1942), and Djakarta (1942–1972). Jakarta has also been known as
the Big Durian by most Indonesians and some foreigners.

Officially, Jakarta is not a city, but a province with special status

as the capital of Indonesia. It has a governor (instead of a mayor),
and is divided into several sub-regions with their own administrative
systems. As a province, the official name of Jakarta is Daerah Khusus
Ibukota Jakarta ("Special Capital City District of Jakarta"), which in
Indonesian is abbreviated to DKI Jakarta.

Jakarta is divided into five kota or kotamadya ("cities" – formerly

municipalities), each headed by a mayor, and one regency (kabupaten)
headed by a regent. In August 2007, Jakarta held its first ever
election to choose a governor, whereas previously the city's governors
were appointed by the local house of representatives. The poll is part
of a country-wide decentralization drive, allowing for direct local
elections in several areas.

The cities/municipalities of Jakarta are:

Central Jakarta (Jakarta Pusat) is Jakarta's smallest city and
home to most of Jakarta's administrative and political center. It is
characterized by large parks and Dutch colonial buildings. Landmarks
include the National Monument (Monas), the Istiqlal Mosque, the
Jakarta Cathedral, and museums.
West Jakarta (Jakarta Barat) has the highest concentration of
small-scale industries in Jakarta. The area includes Jakarta's
Chinatown and landmarks include the Chinese Langgam building and the
Toko Merah building. West Jakarta contains part of the Jakarta Old
Town.
South Jakarta (Jakarta Selatan), originally planned as a satellite
city, is now the location of large upscale shopping centres and
affluent residential areas. Jakarta Selatan functions as Jakarta's
ground water buffer, but recently the green belt areas are threatened
by new developments. Much of the CBD area of Jakarta is concentrated
in Setia Budi, South Jakarta, bordering the Tanah Abang/Sudirman area
of Central Jakarta.
East Jakarta (Jakarta Timur) territory is characterized by several
industrial sectors erected in this city. There are also still some
areas of swamps and rice fields in this city
North Jakarta (Jakarta Utara) is the only city in Jakarta that is
bounded by the sea (Java Sea). It is the location of the Tanjung Priok
Port. Big-scale and medium-scale industries are concentrated in North
Jakarta. North Jakarta contains the location of Jakarta Old Town,
formerly known as Batavia since the 17th century, and was a centre of
VOC trade activity in Dutch East Indies. Also located in North Jakarta
is Ancol Dreamland (Taman Impian Jaya Ancol), currently the largest
integrated tourism area in South East Asia.

The only regency (kabupaten) of Jakarta is:

Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu), formerly a subdistrict of
North Jakarta, is a collection of 105 small islands located on Java
Sea. It has a high conservation value because of its unique and
special ecosystems. Marine tourism, such as diving, water bicycle, and
wind surfing, is the most important touristic activity in this
territory. The main transportation between these islands are speed
boat or small ferries.

Landmarks include the National Monument and Istiqlal Mosque. The city

is the seat of the ASEAN Secretariat. Jakarta is served by the
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Perdanakusuma
International Airport, and Tanjung Priok Harbour; it is connected by
several intercity and commuter railways, and served by several bus
lines running on reserved busways.

For God and the Empire

Bali’s Mary Northmore Visiting QE II to be Made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

(6/19/2011)
On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, Mary Northmore, a guardian angel who resides in Bali, will visit Buckingham Palace in London for her investiture as a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

The widowed-wife of the great Indonesian artist Abdul AzizMuch, Maru is much  loved and respected in her decades-long home of Bali as the creator of the Seniwati Gallery of Art for by Balinese women and the founder of a Senyum Bali Foundation.

Mary’s work since 2005 with the Yayasan Senyum Bali  has earned her an invitation for an audience with the Queen. The Bali Smiles Foundation provides critically important surgical procedures for Indonesian people suffering from cranial-facial deformities, performed by dedicated Indonesian and Australian medical teams.

Expressing his delight on Mary Northmore’s recognition with MBE Honors, the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Martin Hatfull, said: “Mary has made a major contribution to the health, happiness and quality of life of many disadvantaged people in Bali and neighboring areas of Nusa Tenggara through Yayasan Senyum Bali’ (The Smile Foundation Bali), which she founded in 2005.")

Yayasan Senyum Bali – Organization

Yayasan Senyum Bali is a non-profit, independent organization working to bring health care to people with craniofacial disabilities.
These patient disabilities include cleft lip and palate and a wide variety of other conditions such as Goldenhar Syndrome, Apert Syndrome, facial tumours and facial accident trauma.
Yayasan Senyum Bali works to raise fund for cranio-facial operations and also establishes partnerships with other organizations to provide logistical and medical support to patients with cranio-facial abnormalities.
This support includes:
o Patient transport to and from home to attend hospital appointments.
o Patient accommodation at our Smile House facility in Denpasar.
o Emotional and logistics support for patients with facial abnormalities to progress them through the health care system.
o The supplying of food for patient plus one escort when they are at the Smile House.
o Making all necessary arrangements including the obtaining of passports, visas and flights to Australia for patients in need of facial surgery at the Australian Cranio-facial Unit in Adelaide.
Yayasan Senyum Bali also manages a Patient Recall System for patients to enable them to attend subsequent operations, check-ups and ongoing treatment at hospitals where their operations were performed to enable them to access ongoing health care. A high percentage of patients with cleft lip abnormalities usually need follow up operations for cleft palate or further appointments for dental work or speech and sometimes hearing therapy.
Yayasan Senyum Bali was founded in 2005 by Mary Northmore, a resident of Bali and an Indonesian national who is the Foundation chairperson.

The 33rd Bali Arts Festival, June 11 -July 9,2011

Celebrating Bali's Art & Culture

The 33rd Bali Arts Festival June 11 – July 9, 2011.

Bali News: Celebrating Bali's Art & Culture
Long-awaited and predictably late in its publication, the schedule of Annual Balinese and international arts performances for the 33rd Annual Bali Arts Festival or Pesta Kesenian Bali is now available - a scant two weeks before the event's commencement.

The Bali Arts Festival opens with its traditional Grand Parade in downtown Denpasar scheduled to kick-off at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 11, 2011.

Daily performances by musical and dance groups from across Bali are the mainstay of daily performances during the festival. International artists from Australia and Japan will join visiting national art troupes from Kalimantan, West Sumatra, Nias, West Java, Central Java, Jakarta, Riau and Pontianak.

Workshops and film showings are also a part of this year's Festival.

The 33rd Bali Arts Festival, June 11 -July 9,2011

Each year, the Bali Arts Festival, besides the classical dances of the island, such as the legong, gambuh, kecak, barong, baris, mask dances and the like, is based on the theme of newly produced "dance choreography" as well as old village dances and activities revived. Over the years, the whole range of classical Balinese stories - Ramayana, Mahabharata, Sutasoma, Panji - have thus been turned into "colossal" Sendratari Ballets.
The main challenge to the Arts Festival is obviously economic in nature. As village life is increasingly feeling the strains of monetary considerations, dancers, musicians and others cannot be expected to continue participating simply for the sake and the pleasure of it. As costs soar, new sources of financing have to be found. The obvious answer is the private sector and in particular the tourism industry. The greater task then is to convince the hotels, travel agencies and tourist guides to be more participatory in the Arts Festival rather than to their own sponsored events.
Considering the pride the Balinese have in their culture, and the adaptability and dynism they have always demonstrated, this little hurdle can be overcome. Trust the Balinese. They will eventually succeed to transform their tradition into a modern, Balinese culture of their  own.

The information is supplied by Dinas Kebudayaan Bali - should further detailed information become available it will be posted on this site. BPC is not responsible for any incorrect information or changes to the under mentioned schedule
