Obama is confirmed to come to Bali, Hillary Clinton arrives in Bali at 7 pm today

NUSA DUA, Indonesia: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived on the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Thursday to attend Asian security talks and prepare a visit for President Barack Obama in November.

Clinton will meet her counterparts from the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the wider East Asia Summit on Friday.
On Saturday, she will take part in the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) security dialogue which includes foreign ministers from ASEAN as well as China, Japan, the Koreas, Russia and Australia.
Issues such as territorial disputes in the South China Sea, North Korea’s nuclear programme, the Thai-Cambodia border dispute and human rights in Myanmar are expected to be discussed in the course of the meetings.

Washington, DC

SECRETARY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON:
Secretary Clinton is en route to foreign travel in Bali, Indonesia. She is accompanied by Under Secretary Hormats and Director Sullivan. Click here for more information.

Clinton will also be laying the groundwork for Obama’s visit to Indonesia in November for the East Asia Summit leadership meeting, which will be the first time a US president has attended the forum.
Clinton’s visit comes after China and Southeast Asian nations announced a “breakthrough” in drawn-out talks on their overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea.
The countries endorsed a set of guidelines designed to reduce tensions in the strategic waterway and create an atmosphere conducive to the eventual adoption of a binding code of conduct.
China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan all have overlapping claims to parts of the South China Sea, believed to be rich in oil and gas deposits and home to shipping lanes vital to global trade.
Clinton riled the Chinese delegation at the last ARF in Hanoi a year ago when she stated that it was in the United States’ “national interest” to keep those shipping routes open for business.

WASHINGTON
US President Barack Obama will participate in talks by the 18-nation East Asia Summit in Bali later this year, the State Department confirmed this week.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was travelling to Indonesia later this month partly to prepare for “President Obama’s participation for the first time in the EAS in November,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
An official in Bali said in May that the island was preparing to welcome Obama on November 19.
Bali government spokesman Ketut Teneng said US Ambassador Scot Marciel had informed the regional authorities of Obama’s intention to attend the regional strategic dialogue, which also includes China and Russia.
It will be Obama’s second official visit to Indonesia, where he spent part of his childhood in the late 1960s.
During his first official trip in November last year, Obama celebrated Indonesia’s evolution from the rule of the “iron fist” to democracy and lauded his boyhood home’s spirit of tolerance as a model for Islam and the West.
Obama said Indonesia’s transformation had been mirrored in his own life, in the 40 years since he left Indonesia, as a youth who was destined to become the president of the United States.
“Indonesia is a part of me,” Obama said, recalling how his late mother had married an Indonesian man and brought her son to then-sleepy Jakarta, where he would fly kites, run in ricefields and catch dragonflies.
Indonesia is hosting November’s regional dialogue in its capacity as chair of ASEAN, the 10-nation grouping which forms the core of the broader EAS.
The United States and Russia were admitted to the 18-nation EAS last year, but Obama did not attend the leaders’ meeting in Hanoi in October, sending Clinton in his place.
Chinese President Hu Jintao is also expected to attend the summit, which closely follows meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Group of 20 rich and developing countries.
Officials in Bali, hit by deadly terror bombings in 2002 and 2005 targeting Western tourists, hope Obama’s visit will prove a tourism windfall reassuring potential travellers.
“Having world leaders meet here will show that Bali is safe. And that has an impact because some countries still have a travel warning, like Australia and America,” Indonesian Travel Association chairman Aloysius Purwa said last month.
“If Obama comes to Bali, it will change Americans’ perceptions.”

JAKARTA
Bali’s police chief has been replaced as part of a nationwide reshuffle in the upper echelons of the Indonesian Police.
Hadiatmoko has been replaced by Inspector-General Totoy Herawan Indra.
The reshuffle was ordered by national police chief General Timur Pradopo. As well as the change in Bali, the heads of East Java, Central Java and South Sumatra provinces will also be replaced.
Hadiatmoko, who announced a controversial “shoot on sight policy” earlier this year, in which he instructed officers to shoot fleeing criminals who had targeted foreigners, will move to East Java, where he will replace Untung Suharsono, who has been appointed head of Jakarta Police.
New top officer in Bali Totoy Herawan Indra was formerly assistant to National Police Operations in Jakarta.
The new appointments were officially made at National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday. As part of their swearing in, the incoming chiefs had to recite a new oath promising to avoid corruption and dishonesty.
“There is a new procedure in today’s ceremony, which is an oath for new officers who are exposed to the influences of corruption. This procedure will be undertaken at all ceremonies to inaugurate both high and low-ranking officers,” said Pradopo, who devised the pledge.

Bali is No. 1 island in Asia, and the second favorite in the world.

Bangkok, Bali, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways score high in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2011 readers’ poll

Bangkok, July 7—Bangkok has retained the No. 1 spot as Worlds Best City in Travel + Leisure’s magazine’s 16th annual World’s Best Awards readers’ poll for the second year. Elsewhere, Bali is No. 1 island in Asia, and the second favorite in the world. Meanwhile, hotels in the region that placed on the list of Top 100 Hotels Overall include the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi in Chiang Mai, La RĂ©sidence Phou Vou in Luang Prabang, Laos, and The Peninsula Bangkok (ranked Nos. 7, 16 and 40, respectively), among others.

The Best International Airline as voted by readers across the globe is Singapore Airlines, with Thai Airways International coming in at No. 9. Australia and New Zealand also performed well, with the Lodge at Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand bagging 11th place on the list of Top 100 Hotels Overall. Meanwhile, Discovery Shores in the Philippines was named best spa in Asia.

Recognized as the industry’s most coveted awards, ratings from readers of Travel + Leisure’s international editions—Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, Travel + Leisure Turkey, Travel + Leisure China, Travel + Leisure South Asia and Travel + Leisure Mexicowere counted in the results, which will be published in Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia in the August issue out August 1.

Bangkok scored the top city spot in 2008 as well as 2010, while Bali has moved up a notch since 2010 when it was placed as readers’ fourth favorite island in the world. Singapore Airlines remains the world’s favorite international airline—it has been ranked the World’s Best International Airline for each of the 16 years of the survey. In Asia, the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi was voted as the region’s second-favorite resort; in the city hotels category, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok bagged the top spot among properties in Asia, while The Peninsula Bangkok was placed at No. 4.

“This year is another triumph for our region,” said Matt Leppard, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia. “Not only has Bangkok bagged the coveted top spot again, Bali also remains hugely popular, moving up in the overall ranking in 2011, and almost all of our world-class hotels and resorts are among global traveler’s favorites. Overall, Asia has, again, proven itself to be the world’s favorite place to stay.”

“Meanwhile, our airlines reflect the region’s emphasis on service and have earned their rankings with consistency, reliability and quality,” he added.

“It’s clear that remote and exotic destinations—places that convey a sense of authenticity and adventure—are ruling the day once again in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards,” said Nancy Novogrod, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure in the U.S.

Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2011 Survey Methodology

A questionnaire developed by the editors of Travel + Leisure, in association with ROI Research Inc., was made available to Travel + Leisure readers worldwide at TLWorldsBest.com from December 1, 2010, to March 31, 2011. Readers were invited to participate through Travel + Leisure’s stable of international and online at TravelandLeisure.com. To protect the integrity of the data, after March 31, 2011, Travel + Leisure screened respondents and responses from any identified travel-industry professionals who completed the survey were eliminated from the final tally. The survey website, TLWorldsBest.com, was maintained, monitored, and kept secure by ROI Research Inc., which collected and tabulated the responses and kept them confidential. The scores are indexed averages of responses concerning applicable characteristics. Respondents were asked to rate hotels, islands, destination spas, and rental-car agencies on five characteristics; cities, cruise lines, and tour operators and safari outfitters on six characteristics; and airlines and hotel spas on four characteristics (see below). In the hotel, cruise line, tour operators and safari outfitters, and airline categories, respondents could also rate additional optional characteristics; these ratings were not included in the final score. For each characteristic, respondents were asked to rate a candidate on a scale of 1 to 5, where “1” means poor and “5” means excellent. Required component ratings were then averaged, creating an overall score. A minimum number of responses was necessary for a candidate to be eligible for inclusion in the World’s Best Awards listings.

These were the categories and characteristics:
Hotels Rooms/facilities, location, service, restaurants/food, value.
Cities Sights, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people, shopping, value.
Islands Natural attractions, activities/sights, restaurants/food, people, value.
Tour operators and safari outfitters Staff/guides, itineraries/destinations, activities, accommodations, food, value.
Airlines Cabin comfort, in-flight service, customer service, value.
Destination spas Accommodations/ambience, treatments, service, food, value.
Hotel spas Ambience, treatments, service, value.

Throughout the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, scores shown have been rounded to the nearest hundredth of a point; in the event of a true tie, properties, companies, or destinations share the same ranking.

Thailand’s new prime minister is stylish and steely.

Yingluck Shinawatra, who has been elected the first woman prime minister of Thailand, has been a shadowy figure on the Thai scene up to now. In her TV interviews she comes across as a typical Thai female presence: deft, slightly steely, understated, her gestures measured and imperturbable, the charm calculatingly uncalculating. She will cut an interesting figure on the world stage. At once corporate and feminine, dynastic and individual, she has joined the ranks of Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, and Indira Gandhi without the gender-war boilerplate of her American counterparts or the stern asexuality of an Andrea Merkel.

Australian woman Michelle Mitchell was the first athlete across the finish line at the 5th BIZNET Bali International Triathlon

Australian Woman First Across the Finish Line at 5th Bali International Triathlon

Bali News: Run, Girl, Run
(6/27/2011)
Three time charmed, after winning in Bali in 2009 and 2010, Australian Michelle Mitchell was the first athlete across the finish line at the 5th BIZNET Bali International Triathlon on Sunday, June 26, 2011.

Her third consecutive victory, Mitchell trimmed 2 minutes off the “Bali Best” time crossing the finish line in 2:27:03 after swimming 1.5 kilometers in Bali’s Jimbaran Bay, cycling 42.5 km through South Bali and the Ungasan Peninsula, and running 10 km through the village streets of Jimbaran.

Pledging to return to Bali in 2012, Mitchell said local traffic conditions and the hills on the bike course made the Olympic distance event especially challenging. Mitchell, who has only competed in triathlon events for three years,  has also won amateur titles in Singapore and the Philippines in Ironman events.

Second place in the woman’s division went to Michelle Boyes timing 2:40:30 followed by Kate Emily Robertson, also of Australia with a time of 2:56:49.

Leading the men in the Olympic distance competition was David Boyes, Michelle’s husband, who finished 4 minutes after his wife with a time of 2:31:07 to lead the men’s Olympic category. Close on Boye’s heels across the finish was David Edwards at 2:31:53.

The top individual Indonesian men’s finisher in the Olympic Distance event was Kadri Regar with a time of 2:38. Meanwhile the top Indonesian finisher crossed the finish line at 3:39:16.

Kadri Regar was the top Indonesian men’s finisher in the Olympic-distance race, completing the swim in 32:49, the bike ride in 1:17:13 and the run in 47:58. The top Indonesian women’s finisher had an overall time of 3:39:16.

Sprint Distance

The Sprint Distance event, covering distances roughly half that of the Olympic Category, saw Michael Turnball from the United Kingdom log a time of 1:16:38 followed by German Roman Floesser at 1:18:15. Third place went to Indonesian Mashuri with a time of 1:19:15

The Women running the sprint distance were led by Rachael Gaundry at 1:20:04, followed Englishwoman Ketaurah Hughes at 1:33:18 and Indonesian Caroline Lafeac in third at 1:34:06.

Rounding out the day was a 5 km fun run which saw several hundred runners sweep through the village of Jimbaran.

The race started shortly after 7 a.m. with the vice-regent of Badung, I Ketut Sudikerta, officially starting the runners into the surf. As racers covered the various courses, a morning party at the beach in Jimbaran took place at the Coconut Grove in front of the Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay.

The location of the finish line, the Coconut Grove also played host to live music and entertainment throughout the morning with local vendors offering food and drink, merchandise and free massages from Jari Menari.
