29/10/2011 – Thai Travel News advises tourists to defer any non-essential travel to Bangkok at the current time. Many attractions have closed and a public holiday has been declared until October 31.  Click here to view our latest update on the current flood situation in Bangkok. 
Thailand is currently experiencing its worst floods in half a century, with more than 2.5 million affected or displaced by floods.  Rains have lashed the country for more than three months non-stop, and the death toll approaches 400.
Throughout the country, supermarket shelves are bare and bottled water is incredibly hard to come by.  Many stores throughout the country are rationing basic food items, such as rice and eggs.
Many have left Bangkok as floodwaters pose a very real threat, and thousands of homes throughout the central and northern provinces remain without electricity and clean water.

The Thai Red Cross has distributed 1.3 million bottles of drinking water, more than 122, 000 family kits and has also set up two emergency kitchens in Ayutthaya and Chainat provinces where its providing hot meals Donate here to contribute the Red Cross’ efforts.

UNICEF and Save The Children Join Forces:

UNICEF and Save the Children have have teamed up to protect flood-affected children. The project will create 10 “child-friendly spaces” (CFS) at evacuation centers with large child populations to provide them with a safe place to play and to participate in structured activities. A donation center has opened up through the Thai embassy in Washington D.C. and donations from U.S. Citizens total over $50,000 thus far. 27/10/2011 –  Thai Travel News advises travellers to postpone any non-essential travel to Bangkok at the present time.  The current situation is highly unpredictable, and while we perceive no threat to our personal safety, the current situation could pose serious inconvenience to the holiday traveller.  For the latest update on the current situation, click here.  Travellers with non-refundable tickets should consider alternative destinations in Thailand, such as Pattaya or Hua Hin, while others should wait until after the situation is resolved.

 Current Situations

We suggest changing your travel plans at the current point in time, as flooding in Bangkok now appears imminent.  Experts say that the entire capital will be inundated with floodwaters and many tourist areas could face between 50cm-100cm of water.  The government has recently advised residents to evacuate now before it is too late.  Many regions throughout the north have already been affected by flooding, as the flow of water inundated Bangkok’s secondary airport at Don Mueang.  Flooding has also been reported at some locations along the river as the Chao Phraya reaches record heights. Warnings have been issued for people living in riverside areas to move to higher ground. 

Flood warning have been issued for a number of communities throughout the north and eastern suburbs.
Areas throughout the inner suburbs of the city remain try, and many tourist attractions and shopping complexes remain open for business.  Hotels are open for businesses and the MRT and BTS are also operating, however some of the exits at MRT stations have been closed as a precautionary measure to safeguard against flooding.
During periods of intensely heavy rain, there is some localized flooding of certain low-lying streets in Bangkok. These conditions are quickly cleared up by municipal work crews and the city’s storm water drainage system.
Roads out of Bangkok to destinations including Pattaya, Hua-Hin and other destinations along the southeast remain clear.
We advise that this warning is for the city of Bangkok only.  There is no flooding affecting Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Hua Hin or Pattaya.  Chiang Mai was affected last month, but floodwaters have subsided and all businesses and tourist attractions are operating normally.

What is going to happen?

Well, no one really knows for sure at this stage.  The worst case scenario is that the entire city is covered in water in depth from  50cm-150cm.  In the event of flooding covering the city, transport will be affected, supplies of fresh water and electricity may be affected and food would be difficult to find.  Some have said that flooding of Bangkok could take longer than a month.  Different experts are saying different things at this stage.  As we know more, we will definitely update it on Thai Travel News.

Our advice:

If staying in the capital, it would be advisable to be within easy access to the BTS Skytrain.  In the event of serious flooding, the BTS Skytrain could still run and provide easy access to the AirportLink Skytrain to Suvarnabhumi Airport.  
The situation at present is constantly changing and it is difficult to foresee an outcome.  Few tourist attractions have closed, shops are open and transport around the inner suburbs of Bangkok is still normal. However, to fully enjoy your holiday to Thailand, we would believe that the best option would be to postpone your holiday until a later date.  We would like to stress that this is not for safety reasons, but in the interest of a holidaymaker.  Changes in the situation are occurring all the time, and while tourist attractions, shops and transport are open now, it is impossible to say that they will be open in one weeks time.  The city is also prone to traffic jams, which become in recent days have become worse as flood warnings made.  The volatility of the situation could have a negative effect on a holiday, which is supposed to be an enjoyable experience.
For those who have purchased non-refundable tickets, there are still many places within Thailand that are not affected by flooding.  From Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, travellers can access Pattaya, which is situated about 90 minutes from the airport. Also along the eastern coast is Trat, home to Koh Samet, while Hua Hin, located three hours to the south of Bangkok, is also open for tourists.

Transport in Bangkok

Road: Some roads have been affected in the north of the city and should be avoided as some sections are closed due to flooding. Roads to the southeast and Hua Hin remain open. Visitors routes. For more information, please call Highway Hotline 1586 (local call only)
Rail: Northbound trains have been suspended until further notice.  Refunds are available to passengers who have purchased tickets online.
Bus: Some services around the northern suburbs and Nonthaburi have been cancelled. Nationwide services still running. This number is increasing on a daily basis.
Taxis:Finding a taxi in flood affect ed areas may be difficult. In non affected areas, there are no issues.

BTS and MRT: Operates normally.  70 MRT exits have been closed for precautionary measures to protect against flooding.
Piers / Ports: Ferries in the Chao Phraya River have stopped until further notice.
Air:  Don Mueang Internaitonal Airport has closed affecting all Nok Air and Orient Thai flights. Nok Air have subsequently suspended all services until November 1, while Orient Thai has announced that it will operate domestic flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. Local airlines Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways have implemented ticketing policies covering changes in travel dates due to the current situation.  Many international airlines have also implemented flood policies.  Check with your airline for more details

Accommodation: Accommodation in most of the major tourist centres throughout the city remain open for business.
Food: many supermarkets have experienced a shortage in supply of some easy-to-store products.  Products, such as instant noodles and bottled water, have sold at out many convenience stores around the country. One of the major suppliers, CP All, has issued a statement of apology and insisted that demand will be reached.

Alternative Travel Destinations

Hotel rooms in alternate destinations are selling out fast.  Travellers or residents seeking an alternative in Hua Hin, Pattaya, Koh Samet or even Chiang Mai are urged to do so sooner rather than later. 
Pattaya is situated 1.30 hrs drive from the airport, with accommodation from cheap $14 guesthouses, ranging to luxurious five-star branded hotels. Visitors can take a bus direct from Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya for 124 Baht, while private transfers cost between 1,000 Baht – 2000 Baht depending on how well you can bargain.
Accommodation can be found in Pattaya for as little as $14 per night with Agoda.  Click here to find out more. 
Travellers can also depart to other centres after arriving from their international flights.  Other centres around Thailand remain unaffected by flooding, such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Vietnam is also easily reached by a  number of carriers that operate from Suvarnabhumi Airport.  Tickets to Ho Chi Minh City sell for around US$70, but a Vietnamese visa is required for most nationalities.

Menteri Baru Dilantik, reshuffle kabinet KIB II, transkrip Pidato Presiden SBY 19 Oktober 2011

Menteri Baru Dilantik

Jakarta: Setelah tadi malam mengumumkannya, Rabu (19/10) pukul 09.00 WIB ini Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, didampingi Wapres Boediono melantik 12 orang menteri hasil reshuffle, di Istana Negara. Kesemua menteri tersebut dilantik berdasarkan Keppres No.59/P/Tahun 2011.

Ke-12 menteri yang dilantik yaitu:
1. Menhuk dan HAM Amir Syamsudin menggantikan Patrialis Akbar
2. Menteri ESDM Jero Wacik menggantikan Darwin Zahedy Saleh
3. Mendag Gita Wirjawan menggantikan Mari Elka Pangestu
4. Menhub EE Mangindaan menggantikan Freddy Numberi
5. Menteri Kelautan dan Perikanan Sharif Cicip Sutarjo menggantikan Fadel Muhammad
6. Mendikbud Muhammad Nuh
7. Menpar dan Ekonomi Kreatif Mari Elka Pangestu menggantikan Jero Wacik

"Bahwa saya untuk diangkat pada jabatan ini langsung atau tidak langsung, dengan nama atau dalih apapun, tiada memberikan atau menjanjikan ataupun akan memberikan sesuatu kepada siapapun juga," kata Presiden SBY mengambil sumpah mereka, dan diikuti oleh seluruh menteri yang dilantik.

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Salam sejahtera untuk kita semua,

Yang saya hormati Saudara Wakil Presiden Republik Indonesia, Pimpinan dan para Anggota Dewan Pertimbangan Presiden, para Menteri, para Wakil Menteri, para Pimpinan Lembaga Pemerintah Non Kementerian, para Pejabat Eselon I jajaran pemerintahan,
Yang saya hormati meskipun tidak berada di ruangan ini, para gubernur, para bupati dan para walikota dan segenap jajaran pemerintahan di seluruh tanah air yang saya cintai dan saya banggakan,

Marilah pada kesempatan yang baik ini, kita panjatkan puji dan syukur ke hadirat Tuhan Yang Maha Kuasa, atas perkenan rahmat dan ridho-Nya kita semua masih diberikan kesempatan dan kekuatan untuk melanjutkan tugas dan pengabdian kita kepada masyarakat, bangsa, dan negara tercinta.

Saudara-saudara,
Besok tanggal 20 Oktober 2011, Kabinet Indonesia Bersatu II genap berusia 2 tahun. Tadi pagi baru saja saya lantik para menteri dan para wakil menteri yang menempati pos-pos baru dalam jajaran pemerintahan sebagai bagian dari penataan atau reshuffle dalam jajaran kabinet dan jajaran pemerintahan.

Reshuffle kali ini sebagaimana Saudara ketahui adalah sebagai hasil dari evaluasi menyeluruh yang saya dibantu oleh Wakil Presiden lakukan terhadap capaian Kabinet Indonesia Bersatu II khususnya dan jajaran pemerintahan pada umumnya. Setelah reshuffle kabinet ini dalam waktu dekat mendatang, juga akan kita lakukan penataan kembali jajaran lembaga pemerintah non kementerian dan jajaran badan-badan usaha milik negara. Kita ingin dengan formasi baru ini 3 tahun mendatang tugas yang kita emban dapat berhasil lebih baik lagi.

Saudara-saudara,
Pidato saya kali ini adalah merupakan instruksi dan arahan saya kepada segenap jajaran pemerintahan, baik pusat maupun daerah dan sekaligus ajakan saya kepada lembaga-lembaga non pemerintah, serta masyarakat luas untuk kita bisa berkolaborasi dan bekerja sama, guna menyukseskan tugas-tugas di masa depan.

Saudara-saudara,
Saya bersama Wakil Presiden dibantu oleh sejumlah menteri dan pejabat terkait telah melakukan satu evaluasi menyeluruh. Saya juga telah mendapatkan rekomendasi dari Dewan Pertimbangan Presiden juga merupakan evaluasi yang dilakukan atas kinerja jajaran pemerintahan. Beberapa kesimpulan yang ingin saya sampaikan adalah kita bersyukur dalam kurun waktu 2 tahun ini, sesungguhnya banyak yang telah kita capai, tetapi tidak sedikit pula yang belum berjalan dengan baik. Ekonomi Indonesia selamat dari krisis perekonomian global tahun 2008-2009, yang ekornya masih kita rasakan, bahkan sekarang dunia mengalami krisis ekonomi baru.

Salah satu hasil evaluasi yang penting di luar itu, perlu dilakukannya peningkatan di berbagai bidang, termasuk peningkatan efektivitas kerja pemerintah, baik di lingkungan Kabinet Indonesia Bersatu II, di jajaran pemerintah pusat dan jajaran pemerintah daerah. Cara kerja yang sebutlah business as usual hanya seperti yang berjalan sekarang ini tidak cukup, tidak cukup. Kita harus melakukan perubahan, perbaikan, dan peningkatan atas kinerja kita.

Sementara itu, Saudara-saudara, sebagaimana kita ikuti bersama, perkembangan situasi global, utamanya perekonomian dunia memberikan tantangan baru. Belum kita sepenuhnya pulih dari krisis 3 tahun yang lalu, kini dunia menghadapi goncangan perekonomian baru. Kita saksikan gejolak perekonomian di Eropa dan juga di Amerika Serikat dan di sejumlah negara yang lain.

Ekonomi Indonesia yang sesungguhnya tumbuh baik di atas 6 persen kembali menghadapi dampak dari krisis perekonomian global itu. Oleh karena itu, ini justru menambah relevansi mengapa kita perlu melakukan penataan terhadap kabinet ini, penataan lembaga pemerintahan non kementerian, dan penataan badan-badan usaha milik negara. Kita juga perlu meningkatkan kinerja pemerintahan dan non pemerintahan, baik pusat maupun daerah dan yang tidak kalah pentingnya adalah untuk mengelola APBN dan APBD, keuangan negara kita dengan benar agar tidak boros dan tidak bocor. Ini semua terkait dengan perkembangan perekonomian global yang dampaknya langsung atau tidak langsung kita rasakan.

Saudara-saudara,
Kepentingan utama kita hingga akhir tahun 2014 dapat saya sampaikan ada tiga hal, ulangi, empat hal yang mengemuka. Saya ingin mengingatkan kembali bahwa agenda nasional kita 5 tahun ini, 2009-2014 adalah meningkatkan pembangunan ekonomi untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan rakyat. Yang kedua, demokrasi yang ada di negeri ini harus makin matang dan makin bermartabat. Sedangkan yang ketiga, hukum harus makin tegak disertai dengan hadirnya keadilan bagi semua. Jangan kita lupakan 3 agenda nasional kita itu yang merupakan pilar pembangunan lima tahunan.

Saudara-saudara,
Disamping itu, saya ingin menggarisbawahi bahwa strategi pembangunan ekonomi yang telah kita tetapkan dan kita jalankan sekarang ini, yaitu strategi empat jalur, pembangunan ekonomi yang pro-pertumbuhan, yang pro-penciptaan lapangan pekerjaan, yang pro-pengurangan kemiskinan, dan pro-pemeliharaan lingkungan itu juga harus kita jalankan dengan sebaik-baiknya.

Yang ketiga atau yang lain, saya perlu menggarisbawahi perlunya penyelamatan dan pengunaan secara tepat keuangan negara agar bisa dicegah pemborosan, kebocoran dan juga korupsi.

Sedangkan yang keempat, melihat dinamika global sekarang ini, termasuk perubahan keadaan di dalam negeri kita, kita harus memiliki kesiapan dan kemampuan untuk mengatasi berbagai permasalahan, baik nasional maupun permasalahan sebagai dampak dari krisis ekonomi global sekarang ini. Kita harus siap, harus siaga dan bisa merespon dengan cepat setiap tantangan dan permasalahan yang muncul.

Dengan pengantar itu, Saudara-saudara, saya ingin mengangkat sejumlah isu besar yang harus kita tangani dengan baik dan penuh tanggung jawab, baik kita jajaran pemerintah pusat maupun saudara-saudara kita yang mengemban tugas pemerintahan di daerah, utamanya para gubernur, bupati, dan walikota.

Isu pertama adalah dan akan terus saya garis bawahi, penggunaan uang negara, utamanya APBN dan APBD. Jumlah APBN dan APBD kita terus meningkat secara signifikan, ini terjadi karena ekonomi kita terus tumbuh. Saya menilai masih banyak penggunaan dana APBN dan APBD yang belum optimal dan belum tepat sasaran. Belanja modal masih terlau sedikit sementara belanja pegawai atau belanja rutin masih terlalu besar, masih terjadi praktek korupsi yang melibatkan oknum pemerintah pusat, oknum pemerintah daerah dan oknum DPR. Masih terjadi pembangunan fasilitas perkantoran dan bangunan pejabat negara. Saya lihat di banyak daerah yang terlalu mewah dan mahal. Proses pengalokasian APBN dan APBD masih ada yang tidak transparan dan kurang akuntabel dan boleh dikatakan berbau kolusi ataupun korupsi. Ini evaluasi saya.

Oleh karena itu, saya instruksikan kepada jajaran pemerintahn membenahi perencanaan dan implementasi dari APBN dan APBD kita. Saya mengajak jajaran DPR RI untuk melakukan hal yang sama. Mari kita cegah terjadinya lobi-lobi yang tidak transparan antara unsur-unsur pemerintah, baik pusat maupun daerah dengan unsur-unsur parlemen. Saya juga meminta aparat penegak hukum untuk melakukan pengawasan, pencegahan dan penindakan yang efektif. Saya undang dan saya mengajak BPK, BPKP, KPK, PPATK, Kepolisian, Kejaksaan untuk bersama-sama menjaga keselamatan dari keuangan negara ini.

Saudara-saudara,
Saya sudah menyampaikan beberapa kali, menjadi tekad dan rencana kita untuk ke depan ini makin mengurangi defisit APBN. Kita berharap sebisa mungkin tahun 2014, defisit itu sudah bisa kita nol-kan atau sekecil mungkin menuju anggaran berimbang, sekaligus mengurangi rasio hutang kita, utamanya hutang luar negeri terhadap PDB kita. Tugas itu sangat penting, mengingat dunia sekarang kalang kabut, banyak negara yang tumbang karena defisit yang tinggi dan hutang negara yang juga sangat tinggi. Mari kita bertekad dan kita jalankan betul di tahun-tahun mendatang. Itu isu besar yang pertama.

Isu besar yang kedua adalah kembali tugas untuk mencegah dan memberantas korupsi. Apapun yang terjadi, mari kita jadikan pemberantasan korupsi tetap sebagai prioritas dan agenda utama. Tidak adil, Saudara-saudara, kalau kita bekerja siang dan malam untuk meningkatkan ekonomi dan kesejahteraan rakyat kita, meningkatkan penerimaan negara, sementara itu, korupsi masih terjadi, uang itu dijarah dan dirampok oleh mereka-mereka yang tidak bertanggung jawab.

Pemberantasan korupsi harus tetap dijalankan tanpa pandang bulu, apakah mereka dari unsur eksekutif, legislatif, dan yudikatif; apapun yang ada di pusat maupun di daerah; apapun partai politik asal dari para pejabat daerah dan pejabat negara itu, di hadapan hukum sama. Lembaga penegak hukum dan pemberantas korupsi kita harapkan tetap serius dan tetap bekerja secara serius.

Saya minta dalam hal ini pengawasan dari masyarakat, LSM, dan pers atas upaya pencegahan korupsi ini. Saya akan sangat berterima kasih untuk mendapatkan informasi dan laporan yang objektif, yang mengandungi kebenaran dan tentunya bukan fitnah. Saya juga ingin mengajak semua untuk terus mencegah dan memberantas praktek-praktek mafia hukum.

Ketika saya berkunjung ke beberapa provinsi, saya menerima laporan dari sejumlah gubernur, bahwa masih ada pemerasan oleh oknum penegak hukum kepada pejabat-pejabat di dearah. Ini sama jahatnya.

Ada lagi ketidakjelasan tentang pemeriksaan pejabat. Presiden sering menjadi korban, dalam arti, ada pejabat bermasalah. Rakyat ingin diproses. Jawaban yang ada di daerah, “Sudah di meja Presiden.” Meja saya bersih. Setiap hari ada 20, 30 surat penting, keppres, RUU yang mesti saya tanda tangani.

Dua minggu yang lalu, saya bertemu dengan tiga gubernur. Satu gubernur mengatakan, “Pak, ini terjadi proses yang tidak bagus terhadap Presiden.” “Apa?” “Ada surat-surat ijin yang tidak keluar.” “Terus?” “Kesannya di meja Presiden.” “Berikan satu contoh saja.” “Iya, Pak: Bupati X.” Malam itu juga, saya telepon Sekretaris Kabinet, “Adakah yang masih numpuk di tempatnya Seskab, ijin pemeriksaan pejabat negara yang diduga terlibat korupsi, termasuk Bupati X?” Dikatakan, ”Nihil.” Berarti kalau tidak masuk Seskab, mungkin masih ada di Kejaksaan Agung. Kita minta penjelasan Jaksa Agung, “Tidak ada.”

Satu lagi sumbernya yang masuk ke Presiden: Kapolri. Saya ketemu Kapolri, juga tidak ada. Di mana surat itu? Saya sampaikan kepada gubernur, “Cek daerah!” Jangan terlalu mudah, “Pusat, pusat. Di meja Presiden, meja Presiden.” Buktinya seperti itu. Ini saya minta perhatian yang serius. Bisa saja ada permainan di tingkat lokal. Dengan mudah mengatasnamakan, “Sudah ada di meja Presiden.” 165 ijin sudah saya berikan kepada siapapun. Ratusan yang dikeluarkan oleh Mendagri pada level yang lebih bawah.

Saya juga memberikan atensi khusus di dalam pengadaan barang. Anggarannya besar sekali dari APBN. Masih ada kasus-kasus mark up. Ditingkatkan harganya. Negara sangat dirugikan. Itu tekanan-tekanan dan instruksi saya, khusus pada upaya pemberantasan korupsi.

Isu yang ketiga, Saudara-saudara, adalah pengurangan pengangguran dan kemiskinan. Ini pun tetap menjadi agenda penting kita tiga tahun mendatang. Jalurnya tetap dua. Ekonomi harus tumbuh. Dengan pertumbuhan ekonomi, maka secara ekonomi pula lapangan pekerjaan tercipta. Dan dengan demikian, kemiskinan pun bisa diturunkan. Itu mekanisme ekonomi. Tapi, dalam banyak hal, belum cukup. Oleh karena itu, mesti ada program khusus yang sekarang sudah kita jalankan dan mesti kita tingkatkan di waktu yang akan datang.

Meskipun angka kemiskinan dan pengangguran menurun, tetapi masih belum cukup. Kita sendiri juga belum puas, dalam arti, harus kita tingkatkan lagi keberhasilan pengurangan kemiskinan dan pengangguran itu.

Kunci keberhasilan di dalam upaya ini adalah sinergi antara program pemerintah pusat dan pemerintah daerah. Contohnya, ada Jaminan Kesehatan Masyarakat di tingkat pusat. Di daerah, ada yang mengembangkan Jamkesda. Itu bagus. Saya suka. Ada juga BOS pada tingkat pusat. Di daerah, BOSDA. Itu juga bagus. Kalau begitu caranya, program pengentasan kemiskinan yang menjadi kebijakan dan program pusat, karena diperkuat, diperlebar, dan diperluas oleh daerah, hasilnya hampir pasti akan jauh lebih baik.

Saya juga mencatat, masih tercecer anggaran untuk mengurangi kemiskinan. Banyak pos kementerian, banyak lembaga yang judulnya sama: pengurangan kemiskinan. Kita harus evaluasi dan tertibkan. Dengan demikian, lebih fokus, lebih terarah.

Kredit Usaha Rakyat jumlahnya besar: tiap tahun 20 triliun dan masih bisa kita tingkatkan. Feedback yang saya terima sangat membantu. Saya berharap lebih disukseskan lagi, dengan mengalirkan kredit usaha itu, baik di wilayah hulu maupun wilayah hilir.

Masih upaya pengurangan kemiskinan dan pengangguran, saya berharap, mari ke depan ini kita juga bisa menggerakkan dan melibatkan kaum intelektual muda yang masih menganggur. Mari kita kembangkan kewirausahaannya, mari kita libatkan juga dalam program-program yang prorakyat. Dengan demikian, ada peluang (opportunity) bagi mereka untuk mendapatkan lapangan pekerjaan.

Penciptaan lapangan pekerjaan (job creation) jangan hanya menggantungkan mekanisme pasar, jangan hanya itu. Tetapi, mari kita imbangi dengan program riil. Oleh karena itu, saya menugaskan Menko Perekonomian di tingkat pusat, dan para gubernur, bupati, dan walikota di tingkat daerah untuk benar-benar menjalankan program khusus penurunan kemiskinan dan penciptaan lapangan pekerjaan untuk tiga tahun mendatang. Tentukan pula alokasi anggaran yang tepat. Kalau anggarannya tepat, pasti hasilnya akan baik.

Saudara-saudara,
Isu besar yang lainnya, yang menjadi prioritas kita juga adalah ketahanan pangan dan ketahanan energi. Tahun-tahun terakhir ini, statistik mengatakan bahwa rakyat Indonesia mengkonsumsi pangan dan energi dalam jumlah yang terus meningkat. Golongan menengah juga tumbuh. Jumlah penduduk bertambah. Sementara itu, di tingkat global, situasinya sering tidak pasti. Dan, kita saksikan sering terjadi krisis harga pangan dan harga energi. Situasi ini makin mengkhawatirkan karena unsur cuaca dan perubahan iklim.

Tengoklah Afrika sekarang ini, yang karena kekeringan yang panjang, terjadi krisis kemanusiaan, krisis pangan. Tengoklah Asia Tenggara, negara-negara tetangga kita: Kamboja, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, bahkan Filipina, karena perubahan iklim, juga mengalami banjir yang amat besar, yang hampir pasti mengganggu produksi pertanian mereka. Menghadapi itu, Saudara-saudara, solusinya tiada lain adalah mari kita tingkatkan produksi nasional kita atas pangan dan energi. Itu jalan terbaik.

Khusus pangan, saya menginstruksikan pada jajaran pemerintahan untuk menjalankan dan menyukseskan program surplus beras 10 juta ton pada tahun 2014. Semua pihak harus aktif dan kreatif. Anggaran persiapkan dengan baik, harus cukup dan tepat. Laporan dan pendataan produksi pangan juga harus akurat. Jangan salah. Bantuan untuk petani harus riil dan tepat, termasuk untuk mencapai sasaran itu, perlu dibangunnya infrastruktur yang lebih mengarah kepada peningkatan produksi beras dan pangan, serta distribusi dan transportasi dari komoditas pangan kita yang baik di seluruh Indonesia.

Saya minta khusus program 10 juta ton beras surplus ini, setiap enam bulan para menteri terkait dan para gubernur melaporkan kepada saya pelaksanaan dan kemajuannya, agar kalau ada masalah, segera kita carikan solusinya. Jangan terlambat.

Saudara-saudara,
Di bidang ketahanan energi, saya juga mengajak untuk betul-betul kita capai di tahun-tahun mendatang. Atensi khusus saya adalah pada energi listrik, produksi minyak dan gas, panas bumi, dan energi terbarukan yang lain. Saya berharap, sumber untuk peningkatan produksi minyak dan gas di dalam negeri itu betul-betul harus disukseskan, dalam arti, bisa dijalankan dengan baik. Saya minta dikawal implementasi dari proyek-proyek energi strategis, seperti Cepu, Natuna D-Alpha, dan Masela untuk betul-betul tepat waktu, berjalan dengan baik, untuk sebesar-besar manfaat bagi rakyat kita.

Saya menerima laporan. Program energi panas bumi yang memberikan peluang yang besar mengalami hambatan. Hambatannya sebagian karena insentif yang tidak tepat, tapi sebagian lagi adalah hambatan di daerah yang tidak wajar, yang tidak seperlunya terjadi, sepatutnya terjadi, karena kalau berhenti, opportunity yang besar itu, kita merugi, rakyat pun tidak dapat apa-apa. Oleh karena itu, saya berharap mulai tahun depan ini dilancarkan semua proyek panas bumi. Ini sumber energi yang bersih, dan kita punya deposit yang paling besar di dunia.

Saya juga mengevaluasi implementasi pembangunan pembangkit listrik 10 ribu MW yang pertama. Belum semuanya tuntas, masih ada hambatan. Carikan solusinya, jangan dibiarkan, sekaligus di dalam mempersiapkan proyek 10 ribu MW yang kedua. Timba pengalaman dari hal-hal yang tidak benar pada program yang pertama. Begitu cara kita. Dengan demikian, tahun-tahun mendatang, kita bisa menambah tenaga listrik kita.

Saudara-saudara,
Isu besar yang kelima adalah menyangkut kinerja BUMN. BUMN kita banyak, 141 perusahaan atau BUMN. Asetnya besar. Tapi, keuntungan yang diberikan kepada negara masih jauh di bawah harapan. Ini bisa kita bandingkan, misalnya, dengan BUMN-BUMN sejenis di negara-negara lain. Padahal, biaya operasional yang dikeluarkan jajaran BUMN tinggi sekali, 1.075 triliun, biaya operasional. Sedangkan, capital expenditure tercatat 210 triliun. Dengan angka ini, hampir pasti ada yang salah dan ada keborosan penggunaan keuangan BUMN yang mayoritasnya dimiliki oleh negara.

Saya minta dilakukan reformasi dan transformasi jajaran BUMN kita untuk tiga tahun mendatang. Hentikan biaya tinggi dalam jajaran manajemen BUMN, karena di samping tidak adil juga membahayakan perekonomian nasional. Kita tahu dunia sering mengalami krisis karena perilaku dari korporat di banyak negara yang tidak baik, yang buruk. Sekarang ada unjuk rasa di banyak kota di dunia, ratusan kota menyoroti gaya hidup dan budaya korporat, mengakibatkan atau juga masalah defisit dan hutang negara yang sangat tinggi terjadi di banyak negara sekarang ini akhirnya rakyat yang menjadi korban.

Saya serius untuk benar-benar kita membenahi, membikin makin berkinerja, makin produktif, makin efisien, dan makin berdaya saing jajaran BUMN di negeri ini. Saya akan mengikuti dan akan melihat nanti implementasinya.

Isu besar yang keenam adalah perlindungan dan bantuan TKI di luar negeri.

Saudara-saudara,
Kita ingin sebenarnya terus menciptakan lapangan pekerjaan di dalam negeri. MP3EI dalam kurun waktu 15 tahun mendatang dikandung maksud juga ingin memberikan atau menciptakan lapangan pekerjaan yang lebih luas lagi. Sementara itu realitasnya banyak saudara-saudara kita yang bekerja di luar negeri sejak belasan tahun yang lalu dan jumlahnya juga terus meningkat. Sering terjadi masalah, meskipun saya tahu upaya pembenahan dan perbaikan terus kita lakukan.

Atensi khusus saya terhadap tenaga kerja Indonesia yang akan berangkat ke luar atau sudah bekerja di luar negeri adalah mari kita lakukan penyiapan di dalam negeri sebaik-baiknya, berikan pengetahuan yang lengkap kepada para calon tenaga kerja, cegah kejahatan dan penyimpangan yang dilakukan oleh agen-agen penyedia dan pengirim tenaga kerja. Jangan permisif. Akibat kelalaian, kesalahan apalagi penyimpangan agen-agen pengirim, malapetaka terjadi di negara-negara sahabat.

Manakala ada masalah menimpa saudara kita di luar negeri, bantuan hukum mesti diberikan dengan cepat, tepat, dan efektif, jangan menunggu sampai tidak ada lagi resources kita. Pemerintah dan saya pribadi Saudara-saudara, sering menulis surat atau menyampaikan secara lisan permohonan saya kepada Kepala Negara, Kepala Pemerintahan negara sahabat untuk memberikan pengampunan kepada saudara-saudara kita yang terancam hukuman mati, sebagian telah diluluskan, sebagian masih dalam proses.

Tetapi ingat di negara kita pun, kalau ada kejahatan yang luar biasa, ada permintaan dari pemimpin negara-negara lain, saya tentu juga harus menjadi keadilan. Oleh karena itu, yang paling baik, seraya terus kita berusaha untuk memohonkan pengampunan, maka mari kita yakini bahwa saudara-saudara kita yang bekerja di luar negeri itu mengerti betul hukum, aturan, dan sistem yang berlaku di negara-negara tempat mereka bekerja. Saya minta menteri-menteri terkait dan juga para gubernur, bupati, dan walikota menjadikan perlindungan dan bantuan tenaga kerja Indonesia ini sebagai prioritas.

Saudara-saudara,
Isu yang ketujuh adalah pencegahan dan penindakan kekerasan konflik komunal dan juga terorisme. Belakangan ini terjadi lagi kasus-kasus yang berkaitan dengan konflik komunal dan terorisme. Saya meminta perhatian yang sungguh-sungguh dari semua pihak. Kepada jajaran pemerintah, para gubernur, para pangdam dan para kapolda agar benar-benar dilaksanakan instruksi saya yang saya sampaikan di Bogor beberapa bulan yang lalu bersama-sama Panglima TNI, Kapolri dan Jaksa Agung, Mendagri waktu itu. Intinya dalah mengutamakan pencegahan di seluruh wilayah Indonesia agar tidak terjadi kekerasan horizontal ataupun terorisme.

Manakala setelah kita lakukan pencegahan tetap terjadi kekerasan horizontal, terorisme dan pelanggaran hukum itu, maka hukum harus benar-benar ditegakkan. Pelakunya harus diberikan tindakan yang tegas, jangan sampai ada kesan negara dianggap melakukan pembiaran pada mereka-mereka yang nyata-nyata melanggar hukum.

Saya berharap pengalaman kekerasan di Ambon beberapa saat yang lalu ataupun di tempat-tempat yang lain sering beredar dan diedarkan berita-berita palsu, berita bohong, akhirnya memanaskan situasi, mengagitasi, memprovokasi, terjadilah korban jiwa. Maka demi hukum, saya berharap pelakunya diberikan tindakan untuk mencegah terjadinya keadaan yang buruk akibat penyebaran berita-berita bohong seperti itu. Teknologi tidak boleh disalahgunakan, teknologi harus mendatangkan manfaat bagi umat manusia.

Saudara-saudara,
Negara kita harus memberikan rasa aman kepada semua, termasuk rasa aman kepada siapa pun yang menjalankan ibadah sesuai dengan agama yang dianutnya. Saya berharap para pemuka agama, para tokoh masyarakat juga mengambil peran yang aktif dan konstruktif untuk menjaga kerukunan di antara kita semua, termasuk mencari solusi manakala timbul ketegangan ataupun konflik horizontal, jangan justru memberikan statement yang bernada provokatif dan menghasut. Saya juga berharap dapat dicegah keluarnya peraturan-peraturan daerah yang bertentangan dengan amanat konstitusi dan jiwa pluralisme dari bangsa kita yang harus kita junjung tinggi.

Isu yang kedelapan, ini juga penting saya angkat pada kesempatan yang baik ini, adalah berkaitan dengan integritas, kinerja, dan disiplin pejabat. Saya mendapatkan laporan, banyak pejabat pemerintahan yang berkinerja dan berprestasi baik. Saya salut dan terima kasih. Namun, tidak sedikit pula yang justru sebaliknya, termasuk disiplin yang tidak dijaga. Dilaporkan kepada saya, banyak pejabat daerah yang sering dan lama meninggalkan tempat dan daerahnya dengan alasan yang tidak jelas. Entah di Jakarta, entah di mana. Itu jelas melanggar disiplin, etika, dan tanggung jawab.

Saya minta kepada seluruh jajaran pemerintah untuk menghentikan cara dan gaya kerja yang tidak baik itu. Saya minta pula DPRD, LSM, masyarakat, dan pers untuk ikut mengawasi agar tindakan-tindakan yang tidak disiplin itu tidak terjadi. Mari kita kontrol bersama-sama. Saya juga mendapatkan laporan ada politisasi di jajaran lembaga pemerintahan, dalam arti, pengaruh yang berlebihan dari partai politik-partai politik tertentu. Ini tidak sesuai dengan pakta integritas. Saya minta untuk dihentikan.

Ada juga kasus pembersihan jajaran birokrasi di daerah pascapilkada di daerah, dibersihkan. Alasannya dulu waktu pilkada tidak pro kepada yang menang atau terpilih. Ini juga pelanggaran yang serius. Saya minta tidak terjadi dan saya juga meminta masyarakat untuk bersama-sama mengontrol dan mengawasinya.

Ada juga laporan mudah dan obralnya pemberian ijin penggunaan lahan oleh pejabat daerah menjelang pilkada. Ada catatan, 6.000 ijin tambang yang tumpang tindih, yang belakangan menimbulkan masalah yang serius. Saya berharap BPK, BPKP, dan penegak hukum juga memberikan atensi pada wilayah ini. Itu laporan yang tidak sedap, keadaan yang harus kita hentikan.

Di sisi lain, pada kesempatan yang mulia ini, saya harus mengucapkan terima kasih dan penghargaan kepada para gubernur, bupati, dan walikota yang siang dan malam bekerja untuk rakyatnya. Saya tahu, sering tidak mudah persoalan itu. Tapi, saya melihat indikasinya. Yang mencapai hasil baik dan prestasi yang tinggi dan mereka-mereka, para pejabat di daerah, yang responsif, bertanggung jawab, dan bisa menyelesaikan setiap persoalan di daerahnya dan tidak perlu harus diekspos ke Jakarta, karena selesai di daerah itu .

Saudara-saudara,
Itu adalah delapan isu besar yang mesti kita tangani dengan baik. Kita perbaiki, kita ubah untuk tiga tahun mendatang.

Sementara itu, saya juga mencatat sejumlah isu khusus yang menjadi perhatian rakyat, termasuk perhatian kita sendiri, pada tingkat saya dan tingkat Wakil Presiden. Yang pertama, masih sering digulirkan di arena media massa, yang dianggap sebagai rekayasa penyelesaian kasus Bank Century dan rekayasa kasus Saudara Antasari. Saya berharap, tuntaskanlah penyelesaian masalah ini, dan jelaskan segamblang-gamblangnya kepada rakyat: benarkah ada rekayasanya.

Bicaralah para penegak hukum. Kita memerlukan kebenaran dan kejelasan. Oleh karena itu, para penegak hukum mesti berbicara, melakukan tugasnya dengan baik, dan bersama-sama mencegah berkembangnya syak wasangka di negeri ini.

Keadilan adalah keadilan. Kebenaran adalah kebenaran. Tolong, mari kita cegah dicampuradukkannya antara politik dan hukum. politik politik, hukum hukum. Dan sebagai Kepala Negara, marilah kita jauhkan negeri kita ini dari yang disebut saling curiga, karena sesuatu yang tidak dijelaskan secara gamblang kepada publik. Jelaskanlah. Rakyat ingin tahu duduk persoalannya, kejelasan dan penyelesaiannya yang baik, sesuai dengan prinsip-prinsip keadilan dan kebenaran.

Isu khusus lainnya yang sering menjadi perhatian publik adalah kontrak kerja sama antara Indonesia dengan dunia usaha asing, perusahaan-perusahaan asing. Kontrak itu umumnya dibuat puluhan tahun yang lalu. Secara internasional, memang etikanya, semua bangsa mesti menghormati kontrak. Tetapi, saya berpendapat, jika kontrak itu sangat tidak adil dan keterlaluan, kita mesti bicara baik-baik, tidak harus serta-merta membatalkan, bicara baik-baik untuk kemungkinan dibikin lebih adil dan lebih tepat.

Saya mendapatkan laporan, sejumlah perusahaan asing bersedia untuk berbicara baik-baik. Oleh karena itu, para menteri terkait segera tindak lanjuti, lakukan pembicaraan baik-baik itu, terutama apalagi yang menyangkut perpanjangan kontrak. Harus adil dan memberikan benefit yang jauh lebih tinggi untuk bangsa dan rakyat Indonesia.

Isu khusus yang lain adalah kebijakan khusus untuk Aceh dan Papua. Mari kita pahami. Ada kebijakan khusus, ada aturan khusus, ada perlakuan khusus untuk Aceh dan Papua. Aceh, ada Undang-Undang Pemerintahan Aceh. Papua, ada Undang-Undang Otonomi Khusus Papua. Tolong dipahami, dihormati, dan dijalankan karena itu undang-undang. Yang membikin kita sendiri, yang membikin negara. Tentu semuanya tetap dalam kerangka Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia.

Papua dan Aceh harus tetap aman, keamanan itu harga mati, dan kemudian harus makin maju, sesuai dengan undang-undang yang berlaku, sesuai dengan Undang-Undang Dasar negara Republik Indonesia tahun 1945.

Saudara,
Isu khusus yang lain adalah percepatan pembangunan kawasan timur Indonesia dan daerah tertinggal. Kalau tidak ada kebijakan khusus, tidak ada anggaran khusus, tidak ada intensifikasi untuk peningkatan kesejahteraan di wilayah-wilayah itu, maka wilayah itu akan tetap tertinggal. Mari tahun-tahun mendatang, dengan anggaran yang tepat, dengan program yang tepat, dan dengan aksi nyata di lapangan, kita lakukan benar peningkatan ekonomi dan kesejahteraan wilayah itu, kawasan timur Indonesia, dan daerah-daerah tertinggal lainnya. Berikan atensi pada implementasi koridor Papua-Maluku dalam kerangka MP3EI.

Isu khusus yang lain adalah bisnis pertambangan, termasuk pertambangan batu bara. Banyak sekali masukan kepada saya, kritik, termasuk rekomendasi. Oleh karena itu, menteri-menteri terkait, gubernur, bupati, dan walikota, mari kita pastikan bisnis di bidang pertambangan, termasuk batu bara, benar-benar tidak merusak lingkungan, benar-benar memberikan pajak yang adil untuk negara, dan juga bermanfaat bagi masyarakat lokal. Mari kita ubah dari budaya sekedar membuat bahan tambang, jual beli komoditas tambang ke negara lain menjadi industri pertambangan yang memberikan nilai tambah dan manfaat yang riil bagi negara kita.

Isu khusus lainnya adalah tanah untuk kepentingan umum, termasuk untuk pembangunan infrastruktur. Di sana-sini macet pembangunan infrastruktur kita karena ada hambatan-hambatan di daerah. Saya berharap, carikan solusinya dengan bijak, tapi konklusif, rampung, bukan terhenti. Kembalikan pada aturan. Yang penting, masyarakat jangan dirugikan. Dulu pernah karena kekeliruan barangkali, masyarakat dirugikan. Masyarakat tidak boleh dirugikan.

Tetapi, penyakitnya bukan di situ. Saya melihat ada mafia, makelar-makelar tanah yang menghambat. Rakyat siap sebetulnya, asalkan tidak dirugikan, diberikan santunan yang bagus, untuk kepentingan umum, mereka bersedia dan rela. Tetapi, sering dihambat oleh mafia tanah dan makelar-makelar tanah, sehingga tidak bisa bergerak ke mana-mana. Merugi kita, tidak tumbuh ekonomi kita, tidak berkurang kemiskinan dan pengangguran kita kalau pembangunan infrastruktur tidak bergerak akibat masalah itu.

Ada pula pengusaha yang punya konsesi, banyak sekali, tapi tidak dijalankan, nganggur. Betapa meruginya, tidak bergerak ekonomi di tempat, itu. Rakyat juga tidak dapat apa-apa. Ini juga menjadi perhatian publik. Saya ingin, carikan solusinya, alirkan tahun-tahun mendatang.

Isu khusus yang ketujuh atau yang terakhir, yang perlu saya garis bawahi, adalah menyangkut keselamatan dan manajemen transportasi. Masih terjadi kecelakaan-kecelakaan transportasi darat, laut, udara. Lakukan pembenahan yang lebih baik. Utamakan keselamatan transportasi untuk rakyat kita, dan sektor ini sangat penting, sama juga untuk membangun konektivitas, menggerakkan perekonomian daerah, sekaligus untuk memastikan bahwa MP3EI berjalan dengan baik.

Itulah isu-isu riil, itulah pekerjaan rumah kita, itulah bottlenecking, itulah masalah yang kalau tidak kita atasi secara sungguh-sungguh tiga tahun mendatang bersama-sama kita semua, akan menghambat pencapaian sasaran. Saya sungguh ingin, dan saya akan bersama-sama Saudara semua, bersama-sama para gubernur di seluruh daerah, untuk benar-benar mengatasi masalah-masalah itu, membangun lebih bagus lagi, mendapatkan peluang yang lebih besar lagi, agar semua sasaran pembangunan dapat kita capai tahun 2014, sekali lagi dengan izin Allah SWT.

Yang terakhir, Saudara-saudara, pada kesempatan yang baik ini, saya mengajak dan minta dukungan dari pihak-pihak yang lain agar tugas mulia ini dapat kita laksanakan dengan baik. Pertama, kebersamaan dan dukungan dari parlemen kita, DPR, DPD, MPR dan lembaga-lembaga negara yang lain. Yang saya sampaikan tadi masalah negara, meskipun sebagian besar masalah pemerintah, negara, kita semua yang juga harus menyelesaikan masalah itu.

Yang kedua, saya mengajak dan sekaligus instruksi kepada jajaran pemerintah daerah untuk secara serius menjalankan tugas-tugas penting ini. Saya juga mengajak masyarakat luas yang ketiga, kontrollah kami, kontrollah lembaga pemerintah dan lembaga negara, dengan cara yang konstruktif, tapi juga dukunglah semua program yang ditujukan kepada masyakat kita, kepada saudara-saudara semua, dengan demikian tujuan dan sasaran akan dapat kita capai.

Dan yang terakhir, kepada pers dan media massa, saya juga mengharapkan kerja samanya, berikan kontrol sosial yang tepat, yang obyektif, yang amanah. Dengan demikian, semua bisa kita satukan energi yang kita miliki ini untuk keberhasilan tugas kita semua.

Presiden SBY Kunjungan Kerja ke NTB dan Bali

Jakarta: Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono didampingi Ibu Ani Bambang Yudhoyono akan melakukan kunjungan kerja selama enam hari di Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Barat dan Bali. Hari Rabu (19/10) pukul 13.00 WIB, pesawat khusus Boeing 737-800 milik Garuda yang membawa Presiden SBY dan Ibu Ani lepas landas dari Pangkalan TNI AU Halim Perdanakusuma menuju Lombok Tengah, NTB.

Di Lombok, Presiden SBY rencananya akan meresmikan Bandar Udara Internasional Lombok serta menghadiri Pertemuan Konsultasi ke-8 Indonesia dan Malaysia. Selain itu, Presiden juga dijadwalkan meresmikan Groundbreaking Kawasan Pariwisata Mandalika di Lombok Tengah.

Sementara di Provinsi Bali, Kepala Negara akan meresmikan Pembukaan Rapat Kerja Nasional VIII Asosiasi Pemerintah Kabupaten Seluruh Indonesia Tahun 2011 dan membuka ASEAN Fair 2011.

Presiden SBY dan Ibu Ani dijadwalkan tiba kembali di Jakarta pada Senin (24/10) mendatang. The earthquake that has rattled  Bali since 11:16:27 am, Thursday (13/10), was followed by one after another. Based on the recordings from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region III Denpasar, within four hours , there have been 10 earthquakes as aftershocks. The last earthquake occurred at 15:52:46 pm, on 5.6 the Richter scale . "The others, because their  jolts are so minor that they are hardly felt by the people," said Endro, the Center for Data and Information BMKG Region III.

To Republika Indonesian Daily paper, Endro said the last quake last was strong enough, with its epicenter 10 kilometers under the sea, at 9.76 SL, and 114.53 EL, within 131 kilometers southwest of Nusa Dua.

Based on the monitoring of Republika, the ten earthquakes that rocked Bali make people panic. People rushed out and chose to stay outdoors. "I am afraid to go home, fearing another earthquake. Since at home there is my grandson who is still a baby," said Diah, standing in the yard while holding a baby boy.

LATEST update : A powerful earthquake struck off Indonesia’s popular resort island of Bali on Thursday, sending people fleeing from their homes and hotels in panic. There were reportedly at least 80 people hurt, most of them with cuts, broken bones and head wounds, said Wayan Sudanti, a hospital spokesman.
  
Indonesian authorities said the earthquake measured a magnitude of 6.8, but the US Geological Survey put the quake at magnitude 6.1 and at a depth of 61 kilometres.
Some roofs collapsed, and witnesses told local radio and television stations they saw cracks in the walls of buildings.
The epicentre of the quake was about 160 km southwest of the island's main town of Denpasar.
The earthquake struck off Bali at 11.16am local time (NZT 4.16pm), according to the US Geological Survey.
“It knocked me off my motorcycle,” said one resident, Miftahul Chusna.

Caroline Mercier, a 40-year-old tourist in the island's cultural centre of Ubud, said she was used to feeling quakes in California, but never like this one.

"It started at my feet and went all though my heart and head -- it made me nauseous. My first reaction was to get out of the house. I was very confused when the roof started shaking," she told Reuters.

Novotel Bali Benoa, one of the many resorts in the luxury southern beach area of Nusa Dua, evacuated its guests as the hotel shook for a minute.

"The funny thing is that the foreign guests who were sitting in the lobby did not feel the shaking. They started running when hearing people say 'there's an earthquake' while running down the lobby," hotel worker Ariyanti told Reuters.

Endro Tjahjono, head of information at Bali's meteorology agency, said there was no tsunami potential and no reports of aftershocks. Cracks appeared in the walls and glass lobby windows of his office in the southern town of Kuta, and some top floor ceilings fell off, he said.
 
The police headquarters in Denpasar where a 14-year-old Australian boy is being detained has been evacuated following the earthquake.
It was not clear if the boy had been evacuated from the building, where he has been held since being arrested for allegedly buying a small amount of cannabis last Tuesday.
Hundreds of people poured out of the police headquarters and surrounding buildings after the quake struck, but the prisoners at the police lock-up remained behind bars.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no current warning in effect.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the island of Bali at 11.16am local time on Thursday (2.16pm AEDT), according to the US Geological Survey.
There have been reports of roofs collapsing and cracks in building walls, but no major damage or casualties have been confirmed.
The quake hit about 100km southwest of the island and 60km beneath the ocean floor. No tsunami warning was issued.

Indonesia’s Metrology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) said the earthquake had a 6.8 magnitude and was 10 kilometers deep, 143 kilometers southwest of Nusa Dua.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake’s epicenter was in the ocean south of Bali’s capital Denpasar, but the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no current tsunami warning in effect.

Strong shaking was felt for several minutes in the main tourist district of Kuta, said Endro Tjahjono from the Bali office of Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

“There was panic, everyone ran out of the buildings. When we returned to our office building, we saw some cracks on the wall and plaster had come off the walls,” he said.

Schools, office buildings and hospitals were evacuated.

A number of buildings suffered minor damage.

Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency measured the undersea quake at 6.8-magnitude and put the quake’s depth at just 10 kilometers but said it was unlikely to cause a tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and is frequently hit by earthquakes.

The BKMG said there was no risk of a tsunami.

VIVAnews - An earthquake of 6.8 on the Richter scale struck off the Indonesian resort island of Nusa Dua, Bali on Thursday at 10.16  a.m western Indonesian time ., Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
A temple situated on Jalan Pertigaan Nusa Indah collapsed due to the earthquake. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The inhabitants of Nusa Indah ran outside of buildings. In fact, car drivers and motorbikers pulled over to an open area.

New Lombok International Airport has been inaugurated on October 1, 2011

The brand new Lombok International Airport, capable of receiving wide-bodied aircraft like Airbus 330 and Boeing 767, is to be inaugurated by Indonesia’s President Yudhoyono on October 1, said Governor of West Nusatenggara, M. Zainul Majdi, as reported to Antara.
Located in Central Lombok, some 40 km south of the present Mataram Selaparang Airport, the Lombok International Airport will have a runway of 2,750 meters x 40 meters and apron to accommodate 10 Airbus 330 aircraft, explained Operational and Technical Director of state-owned Airport Management company, PT Angkasa Pura-I, Haryoso Catur Prayitno, in Central Lombok recently.




The airport is built to handle 3 million passengers a year. Airport simulations will be conducted on September 5-8, 2011.
Initially planned to be operational by July 2011, the airport opening was delayed due to the expansion of the airport terminal area from 14,000 square meters to 21,000 square meters.
The island of Lombok together with Sumbawa - immediate neighbors to the fabled island of Bali - are the major islands that comprise the province of West Nusatenggara. Lombok has grown in popularity for its pristine beaches at Kuta and Senggigi and wonderful underwater life at the Gili islands. Mt. Rinjani, the third highest mountain in Indonesia, is also a favorite area for trekkers.
Next year, West Nusatenggara plans to hold the Visit Lombok-Sumbawa Year 2012. With the operation of the new airport, Lombok hopes to welcome 1 million direct international tourist arrivals within the next few years.
The newly-built BIL encompasses a total area of 551 hectares and has a 2,750-meter-long runway to accommodate wide-bodied aircrafts such as the Airbus A 330 and certain types of Boeing 737 or Boeing 747. The airport features a 21,000 m2 terminal area projected to handle 3 million passengers per year and is completed with all necessary facilities such as taxiway, apron, VIP facilities, and information facilities.
To support the new airport, a new bus route has been established from Mataram and Senggigi to BIL. The special buses serving the route have a capacity of 40 passengers and its visual designs are also aimed to promote tourism in Lombok and West Nusa Tenggara. The fare from/to Mataram’s Mandalika Bus Terminal is around IDR 15,000 to 20,000 and from/to Senggigi around IDR 20,000 to 25,000. Taxis will also be available to take passengers around the fabled island of Lombok.

BIL was initiated since the 90s, during Warsito’s tenure as NTB Governor. It was started with the view that the present Selaparang Airport will in the future be overloaded with passengers, considering that Lombok was gradually growing into a significant tourism destination. Today, the current Selaparang Airport is no longer adequate since it has a capacity to serve a maximum 850,000 passengers per year only, while airplane passengers have already exceeded 1.2 million.
Currently, the Selaparang Airport serves domestic airlines including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batavia Air, Wings Air - also known as Lion Wings Air (Lion Air), and Trigana. While internationally, SilkAir serves the Singapore to Lombok route. From October 1, 2011, these airlines will surely land at the brand new Lombok International Airport. With the opening of the new Lombok International Airport, more domestic and international airlines are expected to include Lombok in their routes, and the splendors of this splendid island will become more easily accessible.

Statements and Reactions

The funeral for Steve Jobs, Apple Inc.'s co-founder, is taking place Friday, according to a person familiar with the matter.. The funeral is characterized as a small private gathering, this person said. The person wouldn't say where or when the event was taking place, citing respect for Mr. Jobs and his family's privacy.

The event comes two days after Mr. Jobs passed away after battling an undisclosed illness. He previously underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant.
Apple has said there are no public services planned.

In a letter to Apple's employees on Wednesday, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said that the company is "planning a celebration of Steve's extraordinary life" for staff that will take place soon.
Apple memorialized Mr. Jobs on its website after announcing his death and has encouraged well-wishers to share memories and notes of condolence with a special email address.

Steve Jobs was a visionary who changed the way we live, an innovator whose products brought joy to millions, a risktaker who wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, and an entrepreneur who led one of the most creative companies of our time.

His sage advice was respected by policymakers on both sides of the aisle. His courageous fight against cancer brought strength to many. I hope it is a comfort to those who loved him, especially his family, that so many grieve his loss and are praying for them at this sad time.

Today, we lost one of the most influential thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs of all time. Steve Jobs was simply the greatest CEO of his generation. While I am deeply saddened by his passing, I’m reminded of the stunning impact he had in revolutionizing the way people consume media and entertainment. My heart goes out to his family and to everyone who had the opportunity to work beside him in bringing his many visions to life.

Little did a small group of fans know that declaring "Steve Jobs Day" on Oct. 14 would have such a potential impact.
With Apple's announcement of former chief executive Steve Jobs' death at 56, the declaration of Steve Jobs Day - the day that the iPhone 4S goes on sale - has taken on additional poignancy. And the Facebook page dedicated to the event has become one of the first online memorials in the wake of Jobs' passing, besides Twitter, where the "RIP Steve Jobs" hashtag has dominated the online medium.

“We admire his work,” reads the Steve Jobs Day Web site. “We’ve embraced his vision. And we love what he’s brought to the world. Let’s take a day to honor the man himself and say thank you. Everyone around the world is invited to participate – in real life, Facebook, Twitter, and here.”


'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

This is a prepared text of the Commencement address delivered by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots.
I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.
None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
My second story is about love and loss.
I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
My third story is about death.
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Early Life

Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, to Joanne Simpson and Abdulfattah "John" Jandali, two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave their unnamed son up for adoption. His father, Abdulfattah Jandali, was a Syrian political science professor and his mother, Joanne Simpson, worked as a speech therapist. Shortly after Steve was placed for adoption, his biological parents married and had another child, Mona Simpson. It was not until Jobs was 27 that he was able to uncover information on his biological parents.
As an infant, Steven was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs and named Steven Paul Jobs. Clara worked as an accountant and Paul was a Coast Guard veteran and machinist. The family lived in Mountain View within California's Silicon Valley. As a boy, Jobs and his father would work on electronics in the family garage. Paul would show his son how to take apart and reconstruct electronics, a hobby which instilled confidence, tenacity, and mechanical prowess in young Jobs.
While Jobs has always been an intelligent and innovative thinker, his youth was riddled with frustrations over formal schooling. In elementary school he was a prankster whose fourth grade teacher needed to bribe him to study. Jobs tested so well, however, that administrators wanted to skip him ahead to high school—a proposal his parents declined.
After he did enroll in high school, Jobs spent his free time at Hewlett-Packard. It was there that he befriended computer club guru Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was a brilliant computer engineer, and the two developed great respect for one another.

Apple Computers

After high school, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Lacking direction, he dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months dropping in on creative classes. Jobs later recounted how one course in calligraphy developed his love of typography.
In 1974, Jobs took a position as a video game designer with Atari. Several months later he left Atari to find spiritual enlightenment in India, traveling the continent and experimenting with psychedelic drugs. In 1976, when Jobs was just 21, he and Wozniak started Apple Computers. The duo started in the Jobs family garage, and funded their entrepreneurial venture after Jobs sold his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak sold his beloved scientific calculator.
Jobs and Wozniak are credited with revolutionizing the computer industry by democratizing the technology and making the machines smaller, cheaper, intuitive, and accessible to everyday consumers. The two conceived a series of user-friendly personal computers that they initially marketed for $666.66 each. Their first model, the Apple I, earned them $774,000. Three years after the release of their second model, the Apple II, sales increased 700 percent to $139 million dollars. In 1980, Apple Computer became a publically traded company with a market value of $1.2 billion on the very first day of trading. Jobs looked to marketing expert John Scully of Pepsi-Cola to help fill the role of Apple's President.

Departure from Apple

However, the next several products from Apple suffered significant design flaws resulting in recalls and consumer disappointment. IBM suddenly surpassed Apple sales, and Apple had to compete with an IBM/PC dominated business world. In 1984 Apple released the Macintosh, marketing the computer as a piece of a counter culture lifestyle: romantic, youthful, creative. But despite positive sales and performance superior to IBM's PCs, the Macintosh was still not IBM compatible. Scully believed Jobs was hurting Apple, and executives began to phase him out.
In 1985, Jobs resigned as Apple's CEO to begin a new hardware and software company called NeXT, Inc. The following year Jobs purchased an animation company from George Lucas, which later became Pixar Animation Studios. Believing in Pixar's potential, Jobs initially invested $50 million of his own money into the company. Pixar Studios went on to produce wildly popular animation films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Pixar's films have netted $4 billion. The studio merged with Walt Disney in 2006, making Steve Jobs Disney's largest shareholder.

Reinventing Apple

Despite Pixar's success, NeXT, Inc. floundered in its attempts to sell its specialized operating system to mainstream America. Apple eventually bought the company in 1997 for $429 million. That same year, Jobs returned to his post as Apple's CEO.
Much like Steve Jobs instigated Apple's success in the 1970s, he is credited with revitalizing the company in the 1990s. With a new management team, altered stock options, and a self-imposed annual salary of $1 a year, Jobs put Apple back on track. His ingenious products such as the iMac, effective branding campaigns, and stylish designs caught the attention of consumers once again.

Pancreatic Cancer

In 2003, Jobs discovered he had a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare but operable form of pancreatic cancer. Instead of immediately opting for surgery, Jobs chose to alter his pescovegetarian diet while weighing Eastern treatment options. For nine months Jobs postponed surgery, making Apple's board of directors nervous. Executives feared that shareholders would pull their stocks if word got out that their CEO was ill. But in the end, Job's confidentiality took precedence over shareholder disclosure. In 2004, he had a successful surgery to remove the pancreatic tumor. True to form, in subsequent years Jobs disclosed little about his health.

Recent Innovations

Apple introduced such revolutionary products as the Macbook Air, iPod, and iPhone, all of which have dictated the evolution of modern technology. Almost immediately after Apple releases a new product, competitors scramble to produce comparable technologies. In 2007, Apple's quarterly reports were the company's most impressive statistics to date. Stocks were worth a record-breaking $199.99 a share, and the company boasted a staggering $1.58 billion dollar profit, an $18 billion dollar surplus in the bank, and zero debt.
In 2008, iTunes became the second biggest music retailer in America-second only to Wal-Mart. Half of Apple's current revenue comes from iTunes and iPod sales, with 200 million iPods sold and six billion songs downloaded. For these reasons, Apple has been rated No. 1 in America's Most Admired Companies, and No. 1 amongst Fortune 500 companies for returns to shareholders.

Personal Life

Early in 2009, reports circulated about Jobs' weight loss, some predicting his health issues had returned, which included a liver transplant. Jobs had responded to these concerns by stating he was dealing with a hormone imbalance. After nearly a year out of the spotlight, Steve Jobs delivered a keynote address at an invite-only Apple event September 9, 2009.
In respect to his personal life, Steve Jobs remained a private man who rarely discloses information about his family. What is known is Jobs fathered a daughter with girlfriend Chrisann Brennan when he was 23. Jobs denied paternity of his daughter Lisa in court documents, claiming he was sterile. Jobs did not initiate a relationship with his daughter until she was 7 but, when she was a teenager, she came to live with her father.
In the early 1990s, Jobs met Laurene Powell at Stanford business school, where Powell was an MBA student. They married on March 18, 1991, and lived together in Palo Alto, California, with their three children.

Final Years

On October 5, 2011, Apple Inc. announced that co-founder Steve Jobs had died. He was 56 years old at the time of his death.
