Between Spaces

In a duel exhibition featuring the works of I Made Suparta Wijaya and Oktara Quevarra Bakara, the Ganesha Gallery at the Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay has successfully juxtaposed the works of two outstanding artists hailing from opposite ends of the archipelago.

Despite this geographical distance in origin, Bakara from Sumatra and Wijaya from Bali share a number of common threads. Born of the same generation, both artists attended the Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta, Central Java and both now make Bali their home. Also shared is a mutual preoccupation with certain shared themes.

Wijaya sums up his philosophy with the Balinese belief that everything we do has consequences both sweet and bitter, good and bad. "I seek to bring an awareness of the consequences of our daily actions", he says, "by recording them". Needless to say, his iconography is enigmatic and symbolic. In his canvas Baby and Pinocchio we see a seated man with white gloves and fake pointy nose staring straight ahead at a child standing on a cloud.

Bakara also speaks of awakening consciousness and the impact of everyday life on his art. "After reflecting on daily life I attempt to construct graphic images that symbolize the thoughts and feelings that dominate me. In the end, the process brings awareness of the next phase," he says.

Bakara's images, like Wijaya's, pose difficult questions. Bakara's Pisa Man," presents a cynical interpretation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The artists also share similar color schemes and a penchant to scribble words, formulas and equations put forth on their canvases as though emanating from some sort of automatic writing.

Amazingly, the work of these two artists are as brilliant and distinct together as they are apart; proving that the whole is never equal to the sum of its parts.

In the case of Bakara and Wijaya, we have two artist who, although equal in many ways, are also different.
