History of Southeast Asian Games

The Southeast Asian Games (also known as the SEA Games), is a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games is under regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia.

The Southeast Asian Games owes its origins to the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games or SEAP Games. On 22 May 1958, delegates from the countries in Southeast Asian peninsula attending the 3rd Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan had a meeting and agreed to establish a sport organization.

Thailand, Burma (now Myanmar), Malaya (now Malaysia), Laos, South Vietnam  and Cambodia (with Singapore included thereafter) were the founding members. These countries agreed to hold the Games biannually. The SEAP Games Federation Committee was formed.

The first SEAP Games were held in Bangkok from 12–17 December 1959 comprising more than 527 athletes and officials from Thailand, Burma, Malaya (now Malaysia), Singapore, South Vietnam and Laos participating in 12 sports.

The last game held was the 2009 Southeast Asian Games (running from 9–18 December) which was the first time Laos has ever held a Southeast Asian Games. It has also commemorated the 50 years of the SEA Games, held in Vientiane, Laos. The next host for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games is Indonesia. The games commenced and progressed largely smoothly, however, praises and commendations were expressed by many athletes, sports officials and the press- Laos now joins the list of countries that have successfully hosted the South East Asian Games.
Indonesia SEA Games 2011 will be held in 11 days from November 11, 2011 - November 22, 2011 in two host cities, Palembang and Jakarta with 542 gold medals to be competed through 44 sports.

Indonesia is set to host the 2011 SEA Games in the SEA Games Federation Council Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand 6 September 2006. This year is the fourth time for Indonesia to be host country for Southeast Asian countries sports festival after in SEA Games X 1979, SEA Games XV 1987, dan SEA Games XIX 1997.

As the main host, Palembang will concentrate the game in Jaka Baring Sports Complex which covers an area of 45 thousand square meters and also at the sports center Gelora Sriwijaya Palembang.

In Jakarta, competition venues will be centered in Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK). This stadium is the largest and oldest stadium in Indonesia which is very historic for the people of Indonesia which is located in the capital of Jakarta and has seating capacity of about 88 thousand spectators. Currently, Bung Karno Regions stood wide range of facilities for sporting activities in 36 Venues, Politics, Business, Recreation and Tourism.

SEA Games Organizing Committee or commonly abbreviated as INASOC stated there are four keys of success to be addressed during this Southeast Asia countries sport festival, that are the successful of achievement, successful of management, successful of legacy and that no less important is the successful of democratic economy.

For the SEA Games to be memorable especially for Indonesia and all participating countries, one of the impressions building efforts is done by specifying a logo that depicts Eagle with the philosophy of "Garuda Flight above Indonesia Nature?. As a symbol of the country, Garuda in the global sphere is well known and directly associated with Indonesia.

SEA Games Organizing Committee (INASOC) ensures that they will make the 26th SEA Games memorable also by choosing November 11, 2011 or 11/11/11 to hold the opening ceremony. The opening and closing ceremonies will be spectacularly managed along the banks of the Musi River and historic building, Kuto Besak Fort.

The 26th Southeast Asian Games will be held in Palembang, Indonesia in 2011. This will be the fourth time for Indonesia to host the SEA Games. Previously, Indonesia hosted the games in 1997.
The capital city of Jakarta has been the host of Southeast Asian Games for three times, namely in 1979, 1987, and 1997. Palembang will be the third SEA Games host city that is not the national capital, after Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Torch relay

The chairman of Indonesian National Sport Committee of South Sumatera province, Muddai Madang, said that the flame for SEA Games will be taken from the eternal flame in Desa Mrapen, Purwodadi in the province of Central Java. The flame from Merapen was also used for 2008 Asian Beach Games and 1997 Southeast Asian Games torch relays. The relay will start in Purwodadi and scheduled to arrive in Palembang on November 11, 2011. Indonesia Aims to Succeed at the 26 th SEA Games

COUNTRIES

Indonesia has every reason to succeed at the 26 th edition of the Southeast Asian Games slated Nov, 11-25. Hosting the Games in 1997, Indonesia came away with the outstanding achievement of winning 194 gold medals, 101 silvers and 115 bronzes. That was the last time Indonesia topped the medal standings before showing a continuously disappointing performance, at least until 2007.

Having improved its ranking from fifth place in the 2005 Games in Manila to third in the 2009 Games , Indonesia hopes to bring back its old time glory in the upcoming event to be held in Palembang and Jakarta. “The SEA Games will be a milestone of the awakening of our sports. Let’s work together to win back what we used to have, the overall champion title,” said Rita Subowo, Chairwoman of the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).

Indonesia's road to redemption was started with selecting the events that Indonesia feels they are competitive.

For that, the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc) will propose a list of 536 events in 43 sports for approval to the other ten participating countries during a two-day SEA Games Council Meeting in Bali, Feb.25-26.

If approved, the Games is believed to be the biggest ever since 1997, when 490 events were held in Jakarta.

Palembang, the main hub, and Jakarta will each host 22 sports, with men’s football matches to be split between both cities. Indonesia must win more than 30 percents or roughly 160 gold medals to ensure a first place finish .

The Games is also hoped to help boost both cities economy through trade and tourism.

Sports to be played in Jakarta : archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, canoeing, cycling, dragon boat, equestrian, golf, fencing, judo, football, futsal, karate, kempo, paragliding, pencak silat, sailing, table tennis, taekwondo, vovinam, wushu.

Sports to be played in Palembang : athletics, aquatic (diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo), baseball, boxing, bridge, fin swimming, football, gymnastic (artistic, ritmic, aerobic), petanque, roller skate, sepaktakraw, softball, shooting, volleyball (indoor and beach), wall climbing, water ski.

Palembang. High-ranking government officials defended local Southeast Asian Games organizers here, saying there was still time to remedy delays in the construction of Games facilities.

Amid fears that the South Sumatra administration was behind schedule, Vice President Boediono concluded Friday’s inspection of SEA Games construction projects still confident they would be finished on time.

Should Palembang fail to deliver, however, Boediono said the national government was ready to step in and offer alternatives to prevent “a Commonwealth Games type scenario from happening”— referring to the controversy-ridden Games held in India last year.

“We have this plan already and if the delays persist we will take action. Still, we will not make drastic changes at this point,” Boediono said on Saturday.

Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Andi Mallarangeng said he was open to transferring events from Palembang to Jakarta, and revealed that he had been instructed to monitor developments “closely.”

A team from the Ministry of Public Works has also been assigned to share technical expertise in Palembang.

“The vice president wants us to work with the Ministry of Public Works and the Palembang city government and make sure all steps are taken to ensure preparations for the SEA Games will run smoothly,” Andi said on Friday.

According to Andi, Boediono said he didn’t want the country to commit the same mistakes made by Indian authorities, who were criticized for a below-par running of the Commonwealth Games last October.

“We were reminded of the lessons that we need to learn from India’s hosting of the Games, which got a lot of media attention,” Andi said. “We don’t want that to happen to us.”
