Hoboken artist shows paintings documenting his lifelong experiences with UFOs and aliens

Last Saturday at Balance Hair Salon, also known as 18 Erie Gallery, in Jersey City, he displayed many of these works at the opening reception for "The UFO Abductee Experience Exhibition With David Huggins.''
On display through May 1 are 35 of Huggins' simple, yet meaningful, works featuring himself along with "the little Greys," "Crescent," a "little hairy guy" and a giant insect, all beings he says have been present in his life since the beginning of his encounters.
"Showing Me My Other Body," for example, is a painting of Huggins looking at himself lying naked on an examining table. In "Eight Greys Floating Down," meanwhile, Huggins depicts eight aliens floating into the woods.
Huggins' color palette is dominated by many shades of blue and green, for an effect that at least one visitor found "eerie.''
"I feel some are looking at me, but overall it's pretty cool and there is a story here," Andy, a salon client from Jersey City, said.
The atmosphere at the salon seemed to be designed to transport the gallery guests to the type of world that might be familiar to Huggins. UFO light installations hung from the ceiling flashing different color beams and specks of light throughout the salon as a mini-fog machine pumped clouds of smoke into the crowd.
Staff members and some patrons kept it festive by dressing in hand-crafted, alien-like costumes while discussing Huggins' work and enjoying blue "alien punch" and Apple Jack cereal.
Matt Figler of Westchester explained he was visiting a friend and didn't know what he was getting himself into when he agreed to attend the opening.
“I find it very interesting, especially the people dressed like aliens, but I'm happy I came,'' he said.
The soft-spoken Huggins was not in costume, but rather dressed in a powder blue suit to share his stories. He told of being visited by aliens at home and in the woods and at some point being taken up into the space craft with "the Greys.'' They would hold him, he said, and all float up together.
Huggins' first encounter, he said, was with "the little hairy guy" with big glowing eyes who resembled a "little Big Foot" or a Sasquatch. A few days later Huggins' second encounter was with the insect being, a giant praying mantis-type that sprayed him with blue liquid. From that point on, regular visits by "the hairy guy," the insect being and the "Greys" occurred both day and at night in Huggins' bedroom.
"Crescent," a taller female "grey" with a black wig, was also a regular visitor who took Huggins' virginity when he was 17.
Huggins said his parents believed he was making it all up, but he believes he has fathered more than 60 children with Crescent and is even possibly a grandfather.
Over the years, Huggins has had periods when he was left alone, giving him a chance to marry and have a human son named Michael, though he is no longer married.
Although Huggins suffered from what he described as "curious forgetting" after his encounters, his memory returned to him in 1987, which is when he began painting his experiences.
Huggins has accepted the visits as an ongoing part of his life that continues to this day (his last visit coming about a month ago) as well as the skepticism about its truthfulness.
“I have been to different places, experienced different things, it has been very beneficial,” Huggins concluded as he spoke to the gathered crowd. “Most importantly I know there is something else and know that they exist and I don't ask anyone to believe me."
Huggins paintings will be showcased at the Balance Hair Salon, 18 Erie St., in Jersey City until May 1. The salon is open Tuesdays, 4 to 9 p.m.; Wednesdays, noon to 9 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, `0 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call (201) 369-7000.
