Jackie Chan Indonesia's Tourism Ambassador for China Market

Jackie Chan is currently Indonesia's Tourism Ambassador for China Market,

Jackie Chan, SBS, MBE (born Chan Kong-sang, 陳港生; 7 April 1954)is a Hong Kong actor, action choreographer, comedian, director, producer, martial artist, screenwriter, entrepreneur, singer, and stunt performer. In his movies, he is known for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, use of improvised weapons, and innovative stunts. He is one of the few actors to have performed all of his film stunts. Chan has been acting since the 1960s and has appeared in over 150 films.

Chan has received stars on the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a cultural icon, Chan has been referenced in various pop songs, cartoons, and video games. An operatically trained vocalist, Chan is also a Cantopop and Mandopop star, having released a number of albums and sung many of the theme songs for the films in which he has starred. He is also a notable philanthropist.

Chan is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and has championed charitable works and causes. He has campaigned for conservation, against animal abuse and has promoted disaster relief efforts for floods in mainland China and the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
In June 2006, citing his admiration of the efforts made by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates to help those in need, Chan pledged the donation of half his assets to charity upon his death. On 10 March 2008, Chan was the guest of honour for the launch, by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, of the Jackie Chan Science Centre at the John Curtin School of Medical Research of the Australian National University. Chan is also a supporter and ambassador of Save China's Tigers, which aims to save the endangered South China Tiger through breeding and releasing them into the wild Following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Chan donated RMB ¥10 million to help those in need. In addition, he is planning to make a film about the Chinese earthquake to raise money for survivors In response to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Chan and fellow Hong Kong-based celebrities, including American rapper MC Jin, headlined a special three-hour charity concert, titled Artistes 311 Love Beyond Borders, on 1 April 2011 to help with Japan's disaster recovery effort. The 3-hour concert raised over $3.3 million.

Chan founded the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988, to offers scholarship and active help to Hong Kong's young people and provide aid to victims of natural disaster or illness. In 2005 Chan created the Dragon's Heart Foundation to help children and the elderly in remote areas of China by building schools, providing books, fees, and uniforms for children. The foundation also provides for the elderly with donations of warm clothing, wheelchairs, and other items.
In 2007 Jackie Chan had a new cause to fight for as the World Tourism Organization`s (UNWTO) first Asia-Pacific Tourism Ambassador. In his new role, Jackie Chan  helped promote tourism as a means of fighting poverty throughout the region.

I am really honored to receive this Asia-Pacific Tourism Ambassador award, said the actor. I will do my best to achieve the tasks you have given me: to promote tourism in a healthy and sustainable way, and to help people who are less fortunate through tourism.

Mr. Chan said he had traveled the world making his films and, in that way, has tried to turn the spotlight on different tourism destinations. But he promised that from now on, in his new capacity, he would do a better job.

Now when I slide down a building, I will make sure it becomes a tourist attraction, he joked.

Jackie Chan, already an honorary professor at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, received a plaque from UNWTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli at a brief ceremony held in Macau to celebrate his appointment.

I am extremely happy that UNWTO Tourism Ambassador Jackie Chan will officially join us to promote Asia and the Pacific as a prime tourist destination and help communicate important messages about poverty alleviation, said Mr. Frangialli.

In addition to being Asia`s most popular martial artist, film director, actor and stuntman, Jackie Chan is active in numerous charities in Asia. In Hong Kong, he sponsors the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to help impoverished children and the elderly, and made substantial contributions to help with the fight the SARS epidemic in 2002.

In 2013 , Brazilian business jet maker Embraer announced a marketing coup for the China market: They brought Jackie Chan on-board as both an aircraft owner and as their brand ambassador. Jackie’s new aircraft is an Embraer Legacy 650 that is painted with a red and yellow dragon logo along with his distinctive personal logo on the tail. That alone made it an important display centrepiece at the Singapore Airshow for executive aircraft maker Embraer which as even gone so far as to produce this short video of how Jackie uses his new aircraft:

JAKARTA-An action star from Hong Kong, Jackie Chan, was appointed as Indonesian Tourism Ambassador for the China market.

Director of Tourism Promotion of Foreign from the Culture and Tourism Ministry Nia Niscaya said here on Tuesday that the Indonesian government would be officially appointing veteran actor Jackie Chan, born in Hong Kong, April 7, 1954, as Indonesian Tourism Ambassador immediately.

"The inauguration will be held on August 30, 2014, in China International Travelmart event in Guang Zho," said Nia.

On that occasion, Jackie who has appeared in 100 movies, will sing the song Bengawan Solo, which is popularly known to Chinese public.

The song Bengawan Solo, Chinese version, sung by Jackie Chan will be recorded and can be downloaded freely at the website cn.indonesia.travel.

Jackie who is also Cantopop and Mandopop singer will be in charge of promoting tourism in Indonesia as part of his activities.

The ministry chose the actor who had studied acting since the1970s, considering his action that is well-known even internationally.

"It will be very beneficial for Indonesia, and we hope to attract 1 million tourists from China this year," he noted.

Such promotion, said Nia, was effective because the Indonesian government did not need to spend any money as compensation to the designated ambassador.

However, its impact was relatively large when the ministry had appointed economist Philip Kotler as Indonesian Tourism Ambassador a few years ago.

Bali is the cheapest destination this year, Post Office Travel Money

Which will be the top destinations to make your money go further this year?

2014 holiday winners and losers:

  • Prices are down in 70 per cent of 44 destinations surveyed
  • Holiday spending costs have fallen by 32 per cent in Jamaica
  • Bali is the cheapest destination this year, according to Post Office Travel Money
Holidaymakers planning a trip abroad could find 2014 is a good year to grab a bargain, thanks to the strengthening sterling against most currencies, a new study reveals.
Prices are down in 70 per cent of the 44 destinations surveyed by the Post Office, with costs in some destinations down by as much as 32 per cent.
Find out what the best destinations in the World are as awarded by millions of real travelers.

Bali emerged as the cheapest destination surveyed this year, thanks to a slump in the value of the Indonesian rupiah against the pound.

However Portugal and other tradition European holiday destinations could come under further pressure from non-eurozone sunspots, which have been growing in popularity.

Sales of the Croatian kuna doubled in the past two years, according to the Post Office, while falling prices in Bulgaria could see it grow as a popular destination this year.
Meanwhile the Turkish lira is at a five-year low against the sterling, with prices in its leading resort Marmaris down by 19 per cent in just a year.
Post Office Head of Travel Paul Havenhand said: ‘The fall in the value of the lira should make Marmaris and other Turkish resorts very attractive to bargain hunters.
'Not only have prices fallen this year but they are now 29 per cent cheaper than two years ago.’
The Post Office also tipped the Dominican Republic, Oman, New Zealand and Japan as top hotspots in 2014.
The sliding yen means UK visitors would have 25 per cent more cash in their pockets when visiting destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Mount Fuju, bringing the destination within the reach of a growing number of holidaymakers.
It also tipped Burma, Qatar and the Philippines as emerging destinations to watch.
Burma is opening up to tourism, with a growing number of escorted tours being launched, while the reintroduction of direct flights from Heathrow and Manila could see demand for holidays in the Philippines increase.
Qatar is tipped for success for the third year in a row, with Post Office sales of the riyal growing by a further 31 per cent in 2013 alone.
Paul Havenhand, added: ‘Holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice this year with better value for money in most destinations worldwide.

Our Causes

The Bali Ball 2014 ‘The Best of Bali’ is supporting and raising funds for four incredible charities. Please see below for more information about each organisation.

Bali Kids

www.balikids.org
Bali Kids is a special place for disadvantaged children. In addition to providing short, medium and long term shelter in their orphanage where up to 30 children become part of the Bali Kids family, the Bali Kids facility is also open to sick Indonesian children of all religions living in Bali. Parents from poor or economically challenged communities can bring their child to them for medical attention and treatment. Last year they provided this service to almost 6000 children.

Bumi Sehat

www.bumisehatbali.org
Bumi Sehat runs two community health centers in Bali and Aceh, Indonesia. They provide over 17,000 health consultations for both children and adults per year. Midwifery services to ensure gentle births is at the heart of Bumi Sehat and their clinics welcome approximately 600 new babies into the world each year. Their mission is to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality and to support the health and wise development of communities.

Yayasan Samaritania

Yayasan Samaritania was founded on the 11th September 2004 by Eko Iswanto.
The charity has assisted the poorest of the poor street children sheltering on a rubbish tip in Sanur by providing schooling, health services and nutritious staples for 192 children ranging from 4 to 16 years of age. The compassionate movement of the charity makes a difference in the lives of the poor and impoverished with the consistent support network it offers within the community.

Bali Children Foundation

www.balichildrenfoundation.org
Bali is famous worldwide for its ancient culture, breathtaking landscapes, spectacular beach resorts and being idyllic in every sense.
However Bali’s remote rural communities have been heavily impacted by both man-made and natural disasters and many families are caught in the poverty trap with little or no income. There is minimal government assistance and all education must be paid for.
The drop-out rate in rural primary schools is very high. Children frequently have no option other than a lifetime of working on the land. With objectives including to provide community education in remote areas of Bali plus primary, secondary and tertiary scholarships, the driving vision at Bali Children Foundation, is to provide an educational pathway for disadvantaged Balinese children – a journey leading to growth and long term sustainability.

The Bali Ball would like to express our thanks to our wonderful sponsors for 2014 so far – Primafit, Bali Adventure Tours, Elephant Safari Park & Lodge and Ubud Adventure & Function Centre.
Without your generosity the event simply would not happen and we could not continue providing this life-changing funding to disadvantaged children and families across Bali.
It still isn’t too late to give back to Bali by becoming a Bali Ball sponsor.

DAY 3 OF AIDS 2014

DECRIMINIALISATION, PREVENTION, HUMAN RIGHTS – DAY 3 OF AIDS 2014

Tuesday July 22, 2014, Melbourne, Australia - Delegates to AIDS 2014, the 20th International AIDS Conference, were told today that decriminalisation of illicit intravenous drug use is a key measure for ending HIV transmission around the world.
One of the key sessions discussed the impact of drug policies on people who inject drugs, the spread of HIV and the co-morbidities of tuberculosis and hepatitis. During this session Global Drug Commissioner, Sir Richard Branson, who joined by video link, said the global war on drugs had failed both in terms of drug and public health outcomes, particularly in relation to HIV and hepatitis C, and that the time has come to replace the criminalisation and punishment of drug users with treatment and health care.
“Drug policy reform should not be seen in isolation” Sir Richard Branson said. “It has the potential to affect change in other areas such as the world’s chronically overcrowded penal system or of reducing the negative impact of policing on some communities.
“Globally, we’re using too much money and far too many precious resources on incarceration when we should be spending this money on education, vocational training, and in the case of drug users, on treatment, proper medical care and re-entry.”
Today’s conference activities (Tuesday 22 July) began with plenary presentations about barriers to effective HIV prevention practice. Issues discussed included strengthening health systems (Olive Shisana of South Africa), overcoming gender inequality (Jennifer Gatsi-Mallet of Namibia), and improving financial investments in HIV responses (Mark Dybul, MD of The Global Fund).
Day two also included two key symposiums: one addressing youth leadership in the global HIV response; and another focussed on how better engagement with the science of HIV can improve access to HIV treatments.
This afternoon featured a symposium on HIV and sex workers based on work commissioned by the leading medical journal The Lancet. Several other panel discussions also took place on a range of subjects such as: improving the wellbeing of people with HIV by promoting safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene; the pros and cons of biomedical and scientific advances in HIV prevention technology; and the HIV-related impact of anti-gay laws among men who have sex with men.
This evening, the AIDS 2014 Candlelight Vigil will take place to remember the 35 million people who have been lost as a result of HIV or AIDS related causes, and to celebrate the triumphs of science, medicine, policy and community in the ?ght against HIV and AIDS. Starting at 6pm at Federation Square, this moving event will take on extra significance as delegates honour the six conference delegates who were killed in the MH17 plane disaster.
The Vigil will follow the AIDS 2014 Conference ‘Mobilisation March’ though Melbourne’s city centre.
The Global Village, the conference’s international showcase of community related HIV programmes and activities , will continue to feature a range events including music and dance performances as well as Q&A sessions on young people and sexual health as well as the practice of HIV prevention in disaster and war zones.
All our videos including a daily wrap up from the Global Village are featured on the conference YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/iasaidsconference

Number of HIV/AIDS cases in Bali surpassed 9,191

Each hour, 300 people around the world will contract HIV. AIDS kills more people than any other infectious disease.

Cumulative Number of  HIV AIDS cases in Bali has surpassed  9.191

Indonesia's Provincial AIDS Control Commission says HIV and AIDS infections in Bali have increased year-on-year and even spread into rural areas of the island.
Bali Governor Mangku Pastka expressed his concern about the increasing number of HIV/AIDS cases in Bali , Reportedly  there are currently 9,191 known cases of infection in Bali.
The increase has led to experts warning that heterosexuals and those aged in their 20s are the main at-risk group.
The AIDS Control Commission's Professor Mangku Karmaya says 75 per cent of the cases were among heterosexuals and 40 per cent of the total number infected, are aged between 20 and 29 years old.

Pastika Bali United against HIV:No Dolly sexworkers

As many as 3,699 cases of HIV/AIDS were identified in Bali during the period of January-June 2014, with the majority of cases found in the island’s capital city of Denpasar.

Quoted in Kompas.com, the head of the provincial health service, Dr. Ketut Suarjaya said in Denpasar on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, “Depasar has the greatest number of cases of HIV/AIDS when compared to the remaining eight regencies and metropolitan areas of Bali.”
In Denpasar, the capital of Bali , the number of males afflicted with HIV is 1,246 and females  (577) out of 1.823 people," he said.

The figures break down further to 1,876 cases of HIV and 1,823 cases of AIDS.

According to Ketut Suarjaya , the figures break down further to 1,876 cases of HIV and 1,823 cases of AIDS.
Depasar has the greatest number of cases of HIV/AIDS when compared to the remaining seven regencies of Bali.”
In Denpasar, the capital of Bali , the number of males afflicted with HIV is 1,246 and females  (577) out of 1.823 people," he said.
The second highest number of HIV/AIDS cases are found in Buleleng in North Bali where1,632 cases of HIV/AIDS are reported.

Coming in third in terms of HIV/AIDS cases in Bali is the regency of Bandung with 1,343 cases.

Ubud and its surrounding regency of Gianyar reports 683 cases of HIV/AIDS. Tabanan 556 cases, Jembrana 505 cases, Karangasem 292 cases, Klungkung 219 cases and Bangli 170 cases.

Several discussions have concluded that the sluggishness of HIV/AIDS prevention in Bali was due to campaigns that were too focused on prostitutes. Many view a strategy of demand-reduction as a more effective solution, as those paying for sex held a greater power for spreading the disease.

Condom use among Bali-based prostitutes stands at just 40 percent.
Education is key to HIV prevention, not closing brothels
Medical experts and NGOs have announced that increasing awareness about the danger of HIV/AIDS among those working in red-light districts as sex workers is the best solution for preventing the spread of disease.

They were responding to the last month’s closure of the Dolly red-light district in Surabaya, East Java — the biggest such district in Indonesia and arguably the whole of Southeast Asia — by the local administration
.

The Bali Health Agency has also aired plans to provide counseling and testing to expectant mothers.

Following the closure, Wirawan said that his commission’s office in East Java would collaborate with UNAIDS — the joint UN program on HIV and AIDS — to study where the sex workers leaving Dolly may go.

They will also study the number of sex workers who change jobs after the closure. “From the research, we will understand what to do here should they [displaced sex workers] end to Bali,” he said.

Medical practitioner Gusti Ngurah Pramesemara said the closure of Dolly would bring more negative impacts to society, especially related to health. “The efforts to educate [the people] and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) will now be more difficult,” he said.

He explained that Bali had proven this to be the case when local authorities shut down brothels on the island only to see them resurface elsewhere, inhibiting HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. Pramesemara said the prostitution industry was complex and required special care.

NGO activists on the island said they faced difficulties in executing HIV/AIDS outreach efforts after the Tabanan administration shut down the red-light district at the Pesiapan bus terminal. The prostitutes who used to work there left and relocated to several remote villa
ges.

What does AIDS2014 mean to you ?

Global Village Connect

What does AIDS2014 mean to you ?

Dr. Peter Singer, CEO of the global health organization Grand Challenges Canada, put it best in this tweet:

Every human life is precious but when we lose those dedicated to saving lives we suffer a double loss.

AIDS researchers, activists and advocates en route to the 20th International AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia are among those believed to have perished on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down over Ukraine on Thursday.
This Is What The Victims Of Flight 17 Did For AIDS Research
his is an excerpt from Michael Kirby's Jonathan Mann Memorial Lecture delivered at the International AIDS conference in Melbourne on Sunday.

We who gather at this conference in Melbourne are no strangers to cruelty and loss. We know about suffering, irrationality and hatred. We have not been free of these forces for a single day since HIV/AIDS first appeared in our midst 30 years ago.

Every one of us can tell stories about horrible acts and brutal conduct that have added to the misery and danger faced by people living with HIV and by those who love and care for them. We know of people who have died, or are dying, of AIDS. Who are seeking love and the human right to respect and to life-saving healthcare. We know many who are denied justice and human empathy. We are here to affirm that there is another path. We point the way. It is why we have come to Melbourne. It is why we must lift our voices. This is not a time for silence.

In the immediate loss of friends and colleagues, who were coming to the conference on MH17, we are reminded, most cruelly, of the earlier death of Jonathan Mann: the first director of the Global Program on AIDS of the World Health Organisation. This inspired humanitarian, who did so much to alert the world to the dangers of AIDS, perished with his wife and a plane full of passengers off St John’s, Newfoundland on 1998. He too was on his way to a conference on AIDS. He too had precious gifts to impart. It was a terrible loss to us and to the world. His memory drives us on.
The exact number of people who were headed to the conference is still unknown, but various AIDS organizations from around the globe began to eulogize the lives that were lost shortly after the crash was confirmed.
Scientist Joep Lange of the Netherlands, who has researched the AIDS virus almost since its discovery, was among the first identified as a passenger on the flight, as was his colleague and partner Jacqueline van Tongeren, who was head of communications at Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development, reports the Associated Press.
World Health Organization spokesman Glenn Thomas is also among the dead, confirmed WHO, as well as three Dutch AIDS activists and advocates, reports the Washington Post. They are Lucie van Mens, Martine de Schutter of Bridging the Gaps, and Pim de Kuijer of Stop AIDS Now.

An estimated 35.3 million people around the world are living with HIV/AIDS. The deaths of these AIDS researchers and activists is a huge loss to the international AIDS community and the world at large, as they broke new ground in terms of medical treatment for patients, led public health and policy efforts and worked to de-stigmatize the disease.
Pim de Kuijer
At the time of his death, Pim de Kuijer was a lobbyist at STOP AIDS NOW!, a Dutch organization aimed at stopping the spread of AIDS in developing countries. According to the organization’s website, de Kuijer's department lobbies Dutch and European governments to develop an international, comprehensive and sustainable response to AIDS.
Aside from his work in support of HIV/AIDS research, de Kuijer worked as an election observer in Kosovo, Egypt and Ukraine, his brother Paul de Kuijer told the New York Times.
“He was an outspoken advocate on human rights, especially the position of women in society and position of gays in society,” his brother added.

Mr. Truss - "There is no place for stigma and discrimination"

We brought a group of young people together - both HIV positive and HIV negative - and watched some heartwarming moments unfold!
With heightened risks of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, sex workers face substantial barriers in accessing prevention, treatment, and care services, largely because of stigma, discrimination, and criminalisation in the societies in which they live. These social, legal, and economic injustices contribute to their high risk of acquiring HIV. Often driven underground by fear, sex workers encounter or face the direct risk of violence and abuse daily. Sex workers remain underserved by the global HIV response. This Series of seven papers aims to investigate the complex issues faced by sex workers worldwide, and calls for the decriminilisation of sex work, in the global effort to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
One of the main arguments of those who oppose any attempt to criminalise prostitution is that it simply drives the industry underground, putting the sex workers in a more vulnerable position.
Pye Jakobsson a spokeswoman for the Rose Alliance, representing Swedish sex workers, says: "You can't talk about protecting sex workers as well as saying the law is good, because it's driving prostitution and trafficking underground, which reduces social services' access to victims."
Prostitution and the operation of brothels is legal in some countries, but illegal in others. In countries where prostitution or the operation of brothels is illegal or socially looked down on, establishments providing sex services may describe themselves as massage parlors, bars, strip clubs, saunas, spas or by some other description

The laws on prostitution in Sweden make it illegal to buy sexual services, but not to sell them. Pimping, procuring and operating a brothel are also illegal. The criminalisation of the purchase, but not selling, of sex was unique when first enacted in 1999, but since then Norway and Iceland have adopted similar legislation, both in 2009, and France began enacting a similar law in 2013.

Female Condoms at a Glance

RIP Lucie van Mens
a champion for the female condom
In a field that prioritized male condoms for the prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission, Lucie van Mens championed the female condom. At the time of her death, she was a Director of Program Development and Support for the Female Health Company, a female condom manufacturer based in Chicago.
She started researching HIV/AIDS and STIs back in 1995, according to a press release. Van Mens also worked as a coordinator for Universal Access to Female Condoms, a partnership that included Oxfam Novib, Rutgers WPF and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the organization STOP AIDS NOW
The female condom is a form of birth control that helps prevent pregnancy and reduce the spread of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and HIV / AIDS. How does a female condom work? Female condoms can be used for vaginal sex or anal sex. A female condom is a plastic pouch with flexible rings at each end that is inserted into the vagina or anus with the outside ring staying on the exterior of the vaginal or anal opening during sexual intercourse.

Some people define abstinence as not having vaginal intercourse when a woman might get pregnant. This is better described as periodic abstinence, which is one of the fertility awareness-based methods of birth control.
And some people define abstinence as not having any kind of sex play with a partner. This is the definition we use on these pages.
Being continuously abstinent is the only way to be absolutely sure that you won't have an unintended pregnancy or get an STD.

Saturday, July 19, 07:20 PM GMT +0800 MH17 Press Briefing By Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT
Today Malaysia Airlines have released the final list of nationalities on board flight MH17. Each of the numbers represents a life lost, and a family in anguish. After this press conference, Malaysia Airlines will release the full passenger manifest.
Malaysia mourns the loss of all 298 passengers and crew. We feel for their families. And we promise to do all we can to ensure that the investigation is completed, and that justice is done.
ON THE INVESTIGATION:
Malaysia is deeply concerned that the crash site has not been properly secured. The  integrity of the site has been compromised, and there are indications that vital evidence has not been preserved in place.
Interfering with the scene of the crash risks undermining the investigation itself. Any actions that prevent us from learning the truth about what happened to MH17 cannot be tolerated. Failure to stop such interference would be a betrayal of the lives that were lost.
Malaysia calls for all parties to protect the integrity of the crash site, and to allow the investigation to proceed. We urge all those involved to respect the families, and the nations who have lost their sons and daughters in this attack.
Yes, MH17 has become a geopolitical issue. But we must not forget that it is a human tragedy. Days after the plane went down, the remains of 298 people lie uncovered.
Citizens of eleven nations – none of whom are involved in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine –cannot be laid to rest. Their lives were taken by violence; now violence stops them being accorded their final respect. This cannot continue.
ON DEPLOYMENT:
Earlier today, Malaysia’s special team arrived in Kiev. We ask for continued support from the Ukrainian government, and the other parties involved, as the team seeks to assist the Ukrainian authorities in recovering and identifying the remains of the passengers and crew, and with the wider investigation.
The world has a moral obligation to ensure that the remains of all victims are recovered and treated with respect. We will play our part in fulfilling this obligation. That is why, later today, I will join the Malaysian team in Kiev, where I will work with my counterpart in the Ukraine government, to support efforts to retrieve the remains, and to assist with the investigation.
I will be joined by the Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation, the Malaysian investigator in charge, and the Chairman of Malaysia Airlines. The CEO of Malaysia Airlines is already in Kiev.
ON THE FLIGHT PATH:
On the matter of MH17’s flight path, I would like to refer to recent reported comments by officials from Eurocontrol, the body which approves European flight paths under ICAO rules.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the officials stated that some 400 commercial flights, including 150 international flights crossed eastern Ukraine daily before the crash. Officials from Eurocontrol also stated that in the two days before the incident, 75 different airlines flew the same route as MH17.
MH17’s flight path was a busy major airway, like a highway in the sky. It followed a route which was set out by the international aviation authorities, approved by Eurocontrol, and used by hundreds of other aircraft. It flew at an altitude set, and deemed safe, by the local air traffic control. And it never strayed into restricted airspace.
The flight and its operators followed the rules. But on the ground, the rules of war were broken. In an unacceptable act of aggression, it appears that MH17 was shot down; its passengers and crew killed by a missile.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
This outrage cannot go unpunished. Once again, Malaysia condemns this brutal act of aggression, and calls for those responsible to be found, and to face the full force of justice without delay.

Media Statement 4: MH17 Incident
1.    Flight plan
MH17’s flight plan was approved by Eurocontrol, who are solely responsible for determining civil aircraft flight paths over European airspace. Eurocontrol is the air navigation service provider for Europe and is governed under ICAO rules.
The route over Ukrainian airspace where the incident occurred is commonly used for Europe to Asia flights. A flight from a different carrier was on the same route at the time of the MH17 incident, as were a number of other flights from other carriers in the days and weeks before. Eurocontrol maintains records of all flights across European airspace, including those across Ukraine.
In April, the International Civil Aviation Organization identified an area over the Crimean peninsula as risky. At no point did MH17 fly into, or request to fly into, this area. At all times, MH17 was in airspace approved by the ICAO.
2.    Altitude
MH17 filed a flight plan requesting to fly at 35,000ft throughout Ukrainian airspace. This is close to the ‘optimum’ altitude.
However, an aircraft’s altitude in flight is determined by air traffic control on the ground. Upon entering Ukrainian airspace, MH17 was instructed by Ukrainian air traffic control to fly at 33,000ft.
3.    Nationalities
Following this afternoon’s press conference, Malaysia Airlines can confirm that a further 16 passengers’ nationalities have been verified. The latest breakdown of nationalities of those on board the flight is as follows:
·         189 Netherlands
·         44 Malaysia
·         27 Australia
·         12 Indonensia
·         9 UK
·         4 Belgium
·         4 Germany
·         3 Philippines
·         1 Canada
·         1 New Zealand
Four passengers’ nationalities remain to be verified.
4.    New flight route
Following this incident, Malaysia Airlines now avoids Ukrainian airspace entirely, flying further south over Turkey.

Tribute to WHO spokesman killed in Ukraine plane disaster

A World Health Organisation (WHO) staff member,Glenn Thomas,  is among the 298 passengers killed in the Malaysia plane crash in Ukraine.

    Rest in Peace , broer

Glenn Thomas, a communications officer at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, was flying to Australia to attend the International AIDS conference which opens in Melbourne on Sunday.

Glenn was a regular speaker at the bi-weekly press briefings organized by the UN Information Service in Geneva updating journalists on the activities of WHO.
A minute of silence was held in his honour during the press briefing on Friday.
Gregory Hartl is a spokesperson for the World health organisation.
" His twin sister says he died doing what he loved. Glenn had been with WHO for more than a decade. He came here from the BBC and spent many years providing communications support to the TB Department. Since 2012 he had been working on the media team in DCO, regularly hosting press conferences and working with you at the Palais and with other journalists to promote the work of WHO. Glenn will be remembered for his ready laugh and his passion for public health. He will be greatly missed by those who had the opportunity to know him and work with him. He leaves behind his partner Claudio and his twin sister, Tracey.

AFP reports that national flags have been lowered to half-mast across Malaysia and at Malaysian embassies around the world.

Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak has demanded that the perpetrators of downed flight MH17 be brought to justice if it is proven it was shot down in east Ukraine.

"If evidence shows the plane was shot down, then we demand the responsible party to be brought to face justice," he said in a live address on national television late on Friday.
Mr Najib refused to pinpoint blame for the tragedy which claimed 298 lives, 43 of whom were Malaysians.

Dutch King Willem Alexander issued a press statement saying he was deeply shocked by what has happened to MH17.

“Just like the rest of the Netherlands, my wife and I follow the news to the minute and we hope to have more clarity soon. We offer or deepest sympathy to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims and to those who are still uncertain if their loved ones were on board the plane,” the statement read.

Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed his dismay over what had happened to MH17.

In a press statement, Rutte said, “Very much is still unclear about the facts, the circumstances and the passengers.”

As reported by NL Times, Rutte his cancelling his holiday and is returning to the Netherlands, adding that he would monitor and handle the situation.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for action on the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine’s airspace on Thursday and asked members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to show their support for Malaysia in handling the incident.
Yudhoyono, speaking at a televised press conference on Friday, expressed his deep condolences to Malaysia and to the families of the 298 victims on board the Boeing 777 aircraft, which was bound for Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.
“Indonesia strongly urges for an international investigation if it is true that the civilian aircraft was shot by a military missile. That is a violation of international law and even a rule of war.
“Indonesia really hopes that the perpetrators be given firm sanctions and legal action. Indonesia is ready to join in the international investigation,” he said at the State Palace.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says there is no other word to describe the Ukraine conflict other than an 'outrage'.
Declaring the tragedy was not an accident, Abbott said Russia now faced a crucial test of its international citizenship, as he called on the international community to take the strongest possible action to ensure such an "appalling crime" can never be repeated.
The forceful comments came after Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop emerged from a meeting with Russia's ambassador to Australia Vladimir Morozov, to reveal Moscow had denied the involvement of pro-Russian rebels and attempted to lay the blame at Ukraine's feet.

Australia's foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop confirms a number of people onboard MH17 were travelling to Melbourne for an Aids conference, reports ABC News.
    01:12:
Ms Bishop's remarks reported by Australian media: "We don't know the cause but there is speculation that the plane was shot down. If that is the case it is an unspeakable crime."

The advice I have is that the final number of Australians aboard is 28,"Tony Abbot said.
Of those, seven were from Queensland, 10 from Victoria, seven from Western Australia, three from New South Wales and one from the Northern Territory.
President Barack Obama says there were almost 100 researchers on MH17 travelling to a conference in Australia on AIDS.
He says: "These were men and women dedicating their own lives to saving the lives of others."
There lives were taken in an act of "senseless violence".
He says we must remember people like these, who are focused on "what they can build, not what they can destroy.... it is important for us to hold them up."
"When terrible events like this occur, the international community must stand on the side of justice and truth."

He says there is likely to be "misinformation" around what has happened, "no one can deny the truth that has been seen in the photos" from the last 24 hours.
President Obama says it is likely that a missile fired from rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine brought down Malaysia Airlines MH17 and that at least one U.S. citizen is among the dead.
"Evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile from an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists inside of Ukraine," Obama said, noting that it's not the only time in recent months that the pro-Russia rebels had taken down airplanes.
He called the deaths of the 298 people aboard the plane "an outrage of unspeakable proportions."
He says: "The eyes of the world are on Eastern Ukraine, and we are going to make sure that the truth is out."
"It is time for peace and security to be restored in Ukraine."

After Thursday’s crash, Mr. Harper released a written statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims and pledging Canadian support for any investigation. He also pointed a finger at Russia for stoking unrest in the region where the plane was downed, a crash widely expected to be the result of a missile strike.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called for a fair investigation into the crash of a Malaysian passenger .
Xi said he was shocked by the crash of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in Ukraine. He also expressed grief over the death of the passengers on board and condolence to the relatives. "A fair investigation should be conducted to find out the truth as soon as possible", he said.
Xi made the remarks when holding a joint press conference with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez on Friday, hours after he arrived in Buenos Aires for a state visit to Argentina, the second leg of his four-nation Latin America tour.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin
     Dear colleagues!
You know that a terrible event occurred today in the sky over Ukraine, an awful tragedy -- a civilian plane was killed, 285 people, according to preliminary information, were killed.
On behalf of the Russian leadership and the Russian government, we express condolences to the bereaved families, the governments of those countries whose nationals were on that plane. I ask you to honor their memory.
    (A moment of silence)
In this regard, I want to note that this tragedy would not have happened if there were peace on this land, if the military actions had not been renewed in southeast Ukraine. And, certainly, the state over whose territory this occurred bears responsibility for this awful tragedy.
I have already given instructions to the military departments to provide all necessary assistance in the investigation of this crime. And I also ask the government of the Russian Federation through the available civilian agencies that have the capability to do everything for a thorough investigation of this event. We will do everything -- everything that depends on us, anyway -- in order that the objective picture of what happened is part of the public domain here, in Ukraine and in the rest of the world. This is an absolutely unacceptable thing, and no one has the right to let this pass without the appropriate conclusions and without all of us having objective information about the incident.
But we have gathered with you for another reason. I would like to talk to you about the socio-economic situation in the country. We also have many other issues of the current character. Let's talk about them.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said his country's armed forces did not take action against any airborne targets. "We do not exclude that this plane was shot down, and we stress that the armed forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets," he said. "We are sure that those who are guilty in this tragedy will be held responsible."
